CL Hawks Win Sloppy Game over Brooks Academy, 62-55
Canyon Lake worked up a big enough lead to hold off SA Academy’s fourth quarter rally in an ugly, 62-55 win.
“We were able to pull out a win in a tough environment,” Head Coach Luke Chapman said. “We played well for stretches and still have a lot we can improve on. I was proud of the way we responded when the game got tight at the end…We executed well and finished the game.”
The Hawks were led in scoring wise by 3 players with Rico Griffin (24), Rylee Spaulding (13), and Nic Rivera (10), leading the way.
A tied first period had Brooks Academy with their largest lead of 5 points, 12-7, before the Hawks would take a little over 1 minute to take the lead, 14-12 with still 1:23 left in those first 8 minutes.
That 3 pointer by Tuff Cantu gave CL 7 unanswered points and lead.
The back and forth of both schools continued until Hawk run scoring 15 points while giving up 5 going into halftime. That run had a 14 point unanswered garage of points as Rylee Spaulding played a major part of this Canyon Lake action.
The Lake went into the fourth quarter with a 13 point lead, 54-41 and that would be the largest lead as Brooks Academy outplayed the Hawks that had the Academy scoring the first 9 points before a Trent MacRoberts bucket stopped the bleeding.
With 3:39 left, Brooks Academy cut CL’s lead to one, 56-55 and a Hawk timeout would have some bench clearing changes that allowed Griffin and Ben Rowe enough points for a final 7 point advantage, 62-55.
Turnovers was certainly a main reason for the sloppiness as this night continued that had all but two Hawk players that entered the game without garnering a miscue.
Three Hawks with double digit scoring but a deep bench would help contribute to this win with 7 assists by Tyler Pauly and MacRoberts (8) and Nic Rivera (9) leading in the rebound department.
Free Throws keep improving that now has CL going over 50% after starting the year shooting FT’s in the 30% range.
Luke Chapman assessed where this Hawk team is as this season continues, “I am extremely excited about this team and know we will continue to develop and improve as the season progresses. We certainly have the right pedigree and character to do so.”
Canyon Lake will look to clean up their game as they will tip-off this Friday at the Marion Tournament when they will open with Devine at Noon and then Blanco later that same day.
