Lady Hawks Basketball Finish in Win over Lytle, 46-24
The Lady Hawk Basketball continues their winning ways after another solid defensive effort against the Lytle Pirates in winning, 46-24.
Canyon Lake has now improved their record to 9-2 and will be home this next Tuesday in searching for a double digit win total.
“We are trying to do a couple of things and we still have a learning curve,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “We had to change a couple of things a little bit out of necessity.”
The Hawks lost the services of Senior Caroline Kullberg recently and now have 4 players on reserve after losing CL’s All-Time Block leader and consistent rebound and scorer inside the paint.
The Lake started this game with a couple of costly fouls to Chelsea Tschoepe the leading scorer for this year and caused Coach Burleson to his depleted bench for help.
Kaitlyn Cox and Madison Harwell was called to duty and responded with more good defense and Cox scored 5 points and 11 rebounds for her work in the paint.
“Block out and get the ball,” Cox said when asked her thoughts when she entered this contest.
On what this group of ladies will need as this season continues personally and team wise, Cox was quick with her response, “I want to block out and secure the ball after I get the rebound….we did a good job tonight but we will need to utilize all of our players.”
Jessie Melendez helped with a solid first half scoring all of her points (8) in this half.
With those contributors, the Hawks, were able to increase their lead to a 13 point half-way mark, 21-8.
Sophia Barber contributed 9 points from beyond the arc which would be the only 3 pointers for CL in this game.
In the 2nd Half, Canyon Lake would use a strong 4th quarter from Marley Carrizales who scored 12 points in those 8 minutes which by itself was 5 more than the Pirates could muster. Carrizales finished with 14 points all in that second half of play.
“Attack the basket more,” Carrizales said in response on her intent when entering the 2nd half of play. “I sometimes hesitate a little bit.”
On the outlook as this season continues, “We will need better communication and be more defensive and get vocal.”
A pretty good night of vocal work after corralling 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks for Carrizales.
Four for five from the charity stripe, which is a welcome sight, based on how poorly the Hawks have converted those ‘Free’ throws (44%) this season.
Canyon Lake faces Natalia next Tuesday before their Christmas break way to Go Hawks!!
