CL Hawks Boys & Girls Lose to Boerne
Canyon Lake’s Boys and Girls were whitewashed by Boerne on Friday night by both Basketball teams.
For the Boys, a case of shooting 8% from the 3-point arc was a contributing factor after being successful on 2 of 24 shots. That first make came during the 4th period when this contest had already been factored as a loss.
Shooting 42% from inside the arc seems to have been a better solution and a possible better score but for the moment, the Hawks, will be battling for their chance of still qualifying for a spot in the playoffs on Tuesday when Llano comes to the Hawk Nest for Senior Night.
The Lake is presently on a 4 game losing streak since a loss to Fredericksburg and will need to rejuvenate this season as it comes down to 3 remaining district battles.
On this night, Rico Griffin finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds leading the team that fell in a hole quickly in that first quarter. The Greyhounds broke out of their gate with a 23 points and a 16 point advantage.
Boerne scored 23 points to open the second half which, in essence, had both teams playing their bench to end this game. Those two quarters resulted in a, 46-17 Greyhound advantage and catching the Rabbit for the Home Team. Except this Rabbit had Hawk Wings.
For the Lady Hawks, the result was not better, after starting their game much like the Boys in getting buried after a, 26-4 advantage for the Lady Greyhounds in their first period.
“We just got off to a real bad start,” Head Girls Basketball Coach Zach Burleson said. “They didn’t miss anything early and we were careless with the ball. After that it was better, but too late….The damage was done.”
This loss was not unexpected as both Boerne and Fredericksburg have separated from the rest of District 28-4A pack many games ago.
The Lady Hawks were led in scoring by Sophia Barber (9) and Marley Carrizales (9) while Jessie Melendez was relegated to 5 rebounds against a team that did not miss too many shots. Carrizales did end with 5 assists in giving CL a ray of sunshine on their road back home.
This will bring CL to their final game this Tuesday when, The Lake, will trek to Llano for a win and chance to continue their season this post-season. With a YellowJacket win, Canyon Lake will see another game against one of these two schools from District 27-4A, Liberty Hill or Salado.
Both clubs are tied at the top of their league and will have some type of tiebreaker if both win their last game.
A Hawk loss to Llano would still have The Lake with a chance of post-season having a play-in game against Bandera for that 4th Seed placement.
