CL Hawks Use Offensive Drive for, 46-35 Win over Beeville Jones

QB Peyton McMullen finished with 116 yards rushing, breaking most yardage gained rushing by a CL Quarterback.

Canyon Lake was run happy in their battle of the slot-t offenses after 4 Hawks broke 100 yards rushing accomplishing something that has never been done at The Lake.

          WOW them Hawks!!

“It was a good win,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “We came out flat and sloppy but we never quit and just found a way to win. Too many penalties and gave up to many explosive plays but those are correctable.”

Coach Drum continued, “Our offense started rolling and still just have one turnover all season, but we will need to come out stronger next week.”

That is two weeks of spreading the wealth after having 3 Hawks breaking that 100 yard barrier last week.

Beeville drew first blood on a 24 yard run by elusive Trojan running back, Jalen Spicer who topped 100 yards and joined the Hawks quartet.

The Hawks answered Beeville’s score with 3 consecutive touchdowns, a one yard run by Derek Wiatrek (111 total yards), Ryan Rivali 2 yard run (103 yards rushing), and Peyton McMullen 51 yard run that had CL’s QB to top 100 yards rushing hitting 116 for this game.

Not forgetting Jesse Horner who is presently leading CL in rushing (358) after a 120 yard evening.

                         LAST TWO WEEKS Rushing:
                         Beeville La Grange Season
       Jesse Horner 120 173 358
       Derek Wiatrek 111 111 255
       Peyton McMullen 116 74 240
       Ryan Rivali 103 102 213

Offensive Coordinator, Troy Moses would certainly be pleased with those numbers, as a slot-t works best when yardage comes from each position. That type of production will open a playbook to an array of calls with positive results.

Offensive Lineman Tyler Atencio was one of many lineman helping Hawks continue rushing up the field.

Canyon Lake’s lethal running game still has 3 Hawk runners that are not dressed as they continue to nurse injuries.

That ground yardage can be added for an offensive line that has been on their, ‘A’ game since that Wimberley contest.

“We are just doing great as a whole team,” Tyler Atencio stated when asked how his cohorts (offensive lineman) feel when a rushing game is in sync. “We stay low with our pad level and drive our feet. We hit the sled every day in practice and we will use that same drive to Jourdanton next week.”

That will be an important game for a team that is one class lower than Canyon Lake, but a school, that is ranked and has a much different offense philosophy than that run first, like CL has experienced these past two Fridays.

Beeville continued to score sporadically which would keep the Hawks without a rest during this game offensively just to keep a safe lead.

The Lake went into halftime holding down a 15 point lead, 29-14 after a busy 22 point 2nd quarter. There was 3 consecutive punts before those offensive gates begin to open up in that 12 minutes of play.

After going up by a touchdown, Dalton Stanley (who also had his first field goal for 20 yards in the 4th quarter) placed a perfect onside kick that allowed CL to use a one play drive by, QB Peyton McMullen, who scored on a 51 yard jaunt.

“Our offensive line has size and has been effective in practice,” McMullen said. “They are a big part of our offense and they did great tonight.”

Kicker Stanley Dalton first field goal as a Hawk!

On McMullen’s thoughts for his touchdown run, “I had blockers in front and I waited patiently (for blocks) and got the job done.”

That QB run was important as McMullen has had opportunities to score but just coming up short….but not on this run as there seemed to be a different resolve in this QB’s eyes.

The Trojans opened the 2nd half with a quick score and CL answered in that same manner as Rivali used his speed and vision on a 22 yard run down the home team’s sideline.

A Beeville fumble had your Hawks with their longest drive time wise that would take air out of the ball. This drive covered 54 yards on 14 plays when Rivali had the honors again scoring from 17 yards out and a, 43-21 lead.

Still much to work on, with too many penalties and giving up too many explosive plays.

What are the thoughts as this season enters the middle stage with a tough district battles coming in a few weeks?

McMullen spoke for the team, “We have got to work harder in practice and get better every week, after the Wimberley game we got a clue of what we could do on offense and defense and we just have to carry it on!!”

The Hawks will be on the road again, taking their 2-1 record south next week in Jourdanton who was ranked 21st. in class 3A play before this week’s results.

Keep IT UP HAWKS!!
