Mistakes Result in Hawk Overtime Loss, 41-40
Canyon Lake’s mistakes resulted in a heartbreaking loss in an overtime game against Blanco, 41-40.
There were a lot of fireworks for this contest and this Panther team had more firepower stored up in getting this win.
It was just the 2nd overtime affair since that Hawk first kickoff in 2008 and that last overtime occurred in a playoff game against Rockport that ended in a loss.
“Too many mistakes with penalties and turnovers,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “I told the team that we beat good teams when we make mistakes and we will have to clean it up and they are correctable.”
Coach Drum continued, “I was proud on how we came back and there were a million plays but we will have to figure out how tom make the plays that help us win these games.”
Those Hawk mistakes put a dent in the armor as the halfway mark of the season, CL ranks last compared to previous campaigns in flags thrown and yards given up via a penalty.
Adding to those mistakes has Canyon Lake with more turnovers than forced as these last two encounters has reversed that positive to the negative category.
There was a taste of miraculous plays at the end of the first half with CL in the lead with just seconds on the clock, but a Hail Mary was good to end the quarter and a Hawk 7 point lead went to zero, 14-14.
The Lake had a lead 4 different times only to see this scrappy Panther team able to tie or take a lead which the scoreboard stated after a made point after kick and win in overtime.
With a slew of Hawk running backs still nursing injuries, the calvary (Shayne Moss) had his second 100 yard or more game finishing with 121 yards.
Jeremy Greene was all over the field with three touchdowns (2 receiving and one rushing) while contributing on the defensive side and special teams too.
It was a Peyton McMullen to Greene pass with no time remaining that helped put this contest into that overtime scenario.
A Ryan Rivali 12 yard run gave CL their last lead but a missed extra point would come back to haunt Canyon Lake 4 weeks before halloween but a full moon did give that weird feeling that turned out to be a loss on this night.
Canyon Lake had a chance to break the tie coming out of intermission but a quick 3 plays in punt helped put your Hawks in a catch-up mold for the remainder of this game.
There would be no defensive stops from that point on in this battle and that Panther stop to start the 2nd half gave the home team first dibs and a win on their homecoming night.
Now Canyon Lake will need to turn their eyes on district play as this week Austin LBJ comes to the Hawk Nest.
LBJ beat Manor and will be a challenge for a team that will have their first home game 6 weeks ago. Some home cooking might be the right medicine needed.
Go Hawks!!
