CL Hawks Finish, 3-1 in Tuesday Games. Basketball, 2-0. Soccer, 1-1

Katy Taliaferro feeds an assist to Kaitlyn Cox in win over Davenport, 24-23.

WHAT HAPPENED on Tuesday?

The Hawks had one of their more successful days of competition this year with a double-header win for the Boys & Girls Basketball teams and the Hawks Soccer teams split their games.

               Let’s Go Hawks!!

First the Basketball teams both came away with one point wins with a last second lay-up by Tyler Pauly that put CL with a win, 63-62. While the Lady Hawks held off the Davenport Wolves with a 23-22 squeaker.

“What a big win for us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman exclaimed. “It was a game that we needed to win to stay alive and it gives us hope and life as we go forward.”

CL Boys are on their 2nd week of district action and had yet to see a win and now using 4 Hawks with double digit scoring and a ball bouncing to the right color jersey gives The Lake a must win.

“It was certainly a roller coaster of a game,” Coach Chapman continued. “We played really well for the first 34 minutes of the game and then the game slowed down and that allowed them (Davenport) to climb back into the game.”

The Wolves took their first lead in the fourth quarter when they forged a 6 point advantage, 57-51with a little over 4 minutes to play. From that point on, the game became a see-saw with each team battling it out.

Then an improbable steal by Pearse McCullagh and assist to a waiting Pauly near the basket would score the winning points with no time remaining.

World’s Finest say Hawks are Too!

“I am really excited for our guys,” Coach Chapman closed. “They have worked really hard and put in work, too it is good for them to be able to celebrate and walk off the floor with a win. Hopefully, this will give us some confidence going forward.”

With Tuff Cantu getting back on the offensive with 13 points as high point, the addition of Pauly’s 11 points and Colton Winters and Peyton McMullen pitching in with 10 points a piece helped give the Hawks just enough firepower to hold off the new school (Davenport) on the block.

CL’s ladies just held on for their win after a flurry of coming from Davenport who entered their last quarter down 8 points to the Hawks.

                      Go Hawks!!

Kaitlyn Cox finished with 13 points which more than doubled the rest of the team as the Hawks woeful foul shooting in that final period almost spelled the Hawks doom.

“It was exciting and a great win for us,” Head Coach Zach Burleson noted. “I am proud of the way we competed. We have continued to learn and play throughout the year and it was great to pull this game out.”

Canyon Lake has a very young team and this year has been seen some building and crafting for future teams in the years to come.

“I am very happy for the girls,” Coach Burleson closed. “They have continued to compete and they deserved this win.”

Yes, a tough year for the home team and a chance to go home with smiles on their face.

Girl’s Soccer Beat Burnet, 1-0.

Another Hawk upstart is The Lake’s Lady Soccer crew that has jumped out to more wins than realized in the past 4 years of play. To top that off, CL now has 9 wins after beating Burnet, 1-0 and now inch closer to district play.

This Hawk Soccer team has played in two tough tournaments with several schools that are larger which had CL with just one loss in the Katy Tournament.

“We had to go pool play instead of bracket play,” Head Girls Soccer Coach Kara Stracener said in recalling last week’s games. “Out of six teams we had the 2nd best record.”

On what the competition was compared to the coming district games? “I would say the competition was pretty comparable to what we might see in the stronger side of our district and one team was probably stronger (Langham Creek) than what we might see in district.”

That has to give this Soccer team more confidence after beating a 6A Clear Brook, 4-0 (goal and assist from Karleigh Schedlbauer, other goals from Gabi Pace, Maddie Pipkin and Emily Pena).
Another win over 5A Barbers Hill, 1-0 (goal from Madison Snipes and assist from Schedlbaue).

Canyon Lake will now go into their final two non-district games sporting a respectable, 9-3 record.

Boy’s Soccer Lost to Taylor (7-0-1), 2-1.

              Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Boys Soccer team lost out by one goal to a tough Taylor Duck team on Tuesday night. This was CL’s first loss for this season and next game will be San Antonio Christian who the Hawks have tied twice this year.

CL did win on a penalty kick to decide the winner in last week’s Hawk Tournament and will certainly play a team that have a chip on their shoulder. This game will see how Canyon Lake might respond when district starts as that round robin district schedule will bring that same similarity of knowing your opponent and respond and shoring up weaknesses to realize wins.

Way to Go Hawks!!
