Spring Sports Preview II with Girl’s Track and Softball
The ReSporter will continue an introduction for a plethora of spring sports that will start when February comes calling in two weeks.
There has already been an article for Boys Track that you can go back and read for the Coaches Corner with Coach Moses a couple of weeks ago.
Now the trek continues with the Girl’s Head Track Coach John Bathels.
“I am excited about this track season,” Coach Barthels started. “I was upset the way we ended last year with just 3 meets under our belts and most of our times at that Kerrville meet were the best of the year which was what you want. Improve each week and peak at the right times.”
That is a tough objective each year in getting the timing to hit at the right time for the Ladies to have their best performance being realized when the district meet comes calling would give this sport a chance to advance several athletes to Region IV Meet.
What are you expecting this year? “Each year we continue to grow in numbers and I believe we will continue to do that this year. We have several young athletes that I think will be contributors in the end during the district meet. We do have several returning athletes that I feel will make a push this year.”
Who are these ladies? “Riley Shear will take over the role of getting points in the sprinter events. She is working hard every day and is running well early. Caitlin Mott has come on strong so far this year in the track class and although I have not timed anything officially, she has improved from decent times last year.”
What events should the Hawk Nation have circled on their list to do when watching a meet this year? “We will be fairly strong in the hurdle events again this year with Claire Schroeder, Maddie Pipkin and Hannah Cortez. Some of the Sophomores that excelled last year in the sprint events will be Maddie Johnson and Kaylee Tripp. I believe they will help us in both sprints and relays.”
Who else? “Autumn Westinghouse is another name that comes to mind, she improved each week in the 800 and 400 respectively on the Junior Varsity team last year.”
Coach Barthels continued, “It may be later in the season when we reach our goals, but I do have hight expectations this year and I am looking forward to a different, but successful season.”
What schools will be the district’s hurdles (pardon the pun)? “Competition continues to be Wimberley and Fredericksburg. They are very talented teams and are always the ones that we are trying to compete with for that district championship. We have been close so many times, we can’t wait to see what we can do!”
Thanks Coach Barthels and the keys for success for those successful schools is having as many athletes as you can get. The strength for a track team comes in the number of ladies that come out to compete. Those numbers add up with student’s that finish in those 3rd-4th-5th and 6th places.

The ReSporter caught up with Softball’s Hayley Galloway next.
“We have a good group of returners coming back,” Coach Galloway started. “Having that experience on the field should help steady us, especially in those pressure situations. We also have a couple of newcomers who will be playing key roles on both offense and defense.”
Last season’s stoppage of play materialized right before the start of district play last year and Coach Galloway had mentioned how the team seemed to be performing better entering that faze of competition.
CL lost some strong seniors last year which has not been the norm from past years. The Lake had 3 or 4 years of losing 1 to 3 seniors total, as this past year, the Hawks said good-bye to several players.
Softball added a new Coach for this season, tell us bout what we will see from Coach Elizabeth Carter.
“I am very excited too have Coach Carter with us this season,” Coach Galloway said excitedly. “The amount of knowledge and experience she brings is second to none. I am looking forward to seeing what she can do with our pitching staff this season, an area that we have had struggles with in past seasons.”
Where else will Coach Carter be helpful? On top of her softball knowledge, she has already started forming great relationships with our athletes. She has already been such a huge asset and I know she will continue to make a huge impact.”
With such a crazy ending to last year what are your final thoughts as the Hawk Nation waits for this year’s softball edition? “The goal is always to make it to the playoffs and this year is not different. To do that we are going to have to compete every day and do the little things right. We are so excited to finally see the start of softball season! After what happened to our season last year, I look for the kids too come out and play with a different kind of fire and urgency. We cannot wait to be back on the field!”
The ReSporter will continue with more Spring Sports showcasing in the coming days!!
Good Luck to this year’s Track and Softball teams and Go Hawks!!
