CL Softball: Hawks Can’t Dig Out of 1st Inning Hole in Loss to Texans, 10-7

Shelby Porter had a key hit in Hawk comeback that came up just short against Wimberley.

Canyon Lake’s Softball team dug a first inning hole that they could not climb out of in losing their opening District 28-4A contest to the Wimberley Texans, 10-7.

               Way to Go Hawks!!

“We came out flat and being down 6 runs that can be defeating,” Head Coach Hayley Galloway stated. “But I am proud of the way we fought back but it was a little bit too late….we played good defense and we were doing a good job of getting on base.”

Getting on base was a truism with 10 hits and 7 Hawks receiving a free base via base on balls for a lofty .447 on base percentage.

That first stanza for Wimbo only had two hits but a walk and three players getting on first via being hit by a pitch was too much to overcome.

Add 4 errors in that inning helped the home team with a 6 runs and an eventual win.

The Hawks did have two players on base to start the game but a double play erased any chance for getting any first blood with these Back-Bone neighbors.

The Lake was left with no runs in the second after loading the bases and but another missed opportunity with no runs.

Gabby Barnes struck out 9 Texans as Hawks came up just short of a win.

By now Gabby Barnes had established one of her best outings in the circle after replacing Kenzie Sayles in that first stanza and struck out the side in the 2nd inning showing her resolve.

“I got a little nervous when I came in,” Barnes said like a Freshman. “I saw that the Umpire’s strike zone was pretty tight, but I actually did good.”

You think? What looked like a run-a-way deficit had CL with a chance to pull off a win as CL did not commit another error and Barnes door was able to shut the Texans in and unable to get any more separation.

“We are all showing up and we need to be ready to play,” Barnes assessed when asked on how this loss might be able to turn around the Hawks outlook as district play continues. “We’ve got to learn and not come out flat and finish strong and be there for each other.”

Barnes struck out 9 Texans and was able to keep the damage within striking range for the Visitors.

That was started in the 5th inning with Wimberley having an 8 run lead and pretty much in control of this outing. A one out walk when Sayles had one of her three base on balls to get things going.

Jodi Glenn-Millhouse single followed with a towering Emma Lane double to left field plated CL’s first run.

                 Let’s Go Hawks!!

Then a Hawk strike returned with more bite in that next inning scoring 6 runs and CL batting around in their batting order.

Madison De Leon started this comeback with an one out double but with another out Canyon Lake would get their next 7 batters reaching base safely. With three consecutive walks followed by a Lane single then a Riley Glenn-Millhouse double that cleared the bases that had CL trailing, 8-6.

That final run of this inning was scored when Shelby Porter singled in Riley that put the Hawks back into the game trailing, 8-7.

Wimberley would get back two runs for a 3 run advantage going into the final inning.

Erin Hartman hit a triple then the top of the batting order was next up but the climb out of that hole was just too much when that final out and a missed opportunity.

This loss was tough but showed that The Lake does not give up easily and a consistent full game can bring some wins as the round robin district schedule steps into high gear.

Canyon Lake will be on the road in Fredericksburg this Friday in a game with one of the District 28-4A favorites.
