Hawks Prepared & Ready for District After Shutting Out Mathis, 2-0

CL Hawk’s two game stint in Corpus area was split with a loss to Sinton and win over Mathis.

Canyon Lake split their Corpus Christi tour with a 2-0 win over Mathis at Whataburger Field on Saturday.

              Let’s Go Hawks!!

Tyler Pauly and Hunter Anderson combined for a 3 hitter in this win that had The Lake delaying their fireworks until the last inning.

These Pirate’s pitchers put eye-patches on CL’s batters allowing one hit in the first inning by Tanner Schultz being the only damage done into those middle innings. In fact, the Hawks were only able to reach second base three times before a 7th inning 2 run rally.

That frame had a lead off triple by Chase Anderson that scored the winning run when Ty Sellers delivered a single which was stretched to a 3 bagger after a left fielder error.

“We needed a big hit and try to get on base because this was our last inning,” Chase Anderson recalled. “We just needed to plate one and I got a good hit and was able to make it to third (base).”

Sellers has had a slow start with his bat during the regular season but his solid game winning hit was long time in coming after finishing his Freshman year with a .311 batting average.

Chase Anderson, Dalton Stanley, Ty Sellers take a trip to Whataburger in win over Mathis.

“About time,” Sellers said in a buying mood. “I saw the ball go to the wall and I just juiced it and dug for third.”

That miscue allowed CL to score their final run when Dalton Stanley lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for that final tally.

This Mathis pitching kept CL off beat by retiring the lead off Hawk batter in every inning but the last two when Pauly opened the 6th inning with a base on balls.

So the runs came when Canyon Lake was able to set up shop on 3rd base, which allowed those 2 runs.

Now The Lake will ready themselves for the start of District 28-4A play this Tuesday in Wimberley.

The good news in this win, was seeing Pauly, giving up 2 hits while striking out 8 Pirates and his 8th win in a row that started last year when he finished that Covid shortened season with 5 wins.

Pauly is now the All-Time leader in strikeouts (131) passing Cody Powell’s 128 while at the Hawk Diamond. He is also the leader in giving up earned runs with a 2.02 era as he continues to shine with the bat, pitching, and defensively this year holding down short-stop with a .942 fielding efficiency with 3 errors in his 52 chances.

Go Hawks and Get More Hits!

CL’s catching is catching on as Chase Anderson and Stanley have caught 14 baserunners which is a huge help for pitching and being a rally killer.

Stanley did the deed twice in this win over the Pirates, “You want to take away a team from wanting to attempt a steal.”

“You have to have quick feet and your hands will follow,” Stanley said in response to what his secrets were for his trade. “We work on that in every practice and just make the transfer…that last throw was on an off speed pitch and I did not have time to step so I just hopped the ball to give us a chance.”

Those throw outs minimized the plank and had these Pirates plunging into the water without any chance for a rescue. Mathis had a total of 6 base runners which was reduced to 4 with those two throws by Stanley.

Canyon Lake will be entering their best record going into district play since the school started in hopes of attaining their second above .500 percentage when the season ends. CL finished with a 6-4 district record during the 2010 season that had a Hawk team going two rounds during the post-season.

On what the Hawks will need when they face the Texans, Chase Anderson closed,  “We know we can compete and they are a good opponent but everything this week goes back to 0-0.”

Sellers was short and sweet, “Wa are prepared and we will be ready.”

The bats were cooled on this two game trip but other parts of the Hawks game with defense and pitching came through for this victory.
