CL Hawks Dominate & Finish Needville Series on a Schultz 2 Hitter, 4-0

Regional Quarterfinals is next after dominating a good Needville team.

Canyon Lake dominated Needville as Pitcher Tanner Schultz threw a two hitter in this, 4-0 send the Blue Jays home, game.

              Way to Go Hawks!

This Hawks’ team dominated with their bats in that first game and then showed off their pitching in a clinching contest. The best Needville could do was a runner being called out at home in the 5th inning. That was the only frame that the Blue Jays threatened to score and the only Blue Jay who made it to 3rd base on this night.

CL will suit up this next week against Navarro (26-3) who is presently ranked 5th in the most recent THSBC Poll. Watch for the Pre-Game Article on Tuesday. Your Hawks moved up to 14th in that same poll.

“We finished firm,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “As a coach you have to decide, ‘do I go with my short-stop or someone else’.” That comment was  based on the Blue Jays bringing in their short-stop to stop the bleeding that started the contest. “We had Tanner (Schultz) and this was the Tanner we had during the first part of the season. His was keeping the ball away and his curve ball was away in the zone.”

On the next opponent? “Navarro is ranked 5th in the state and they are a good team…this will come down to the team that is playing well during the upcoming weekend.”

The Hawks were feeling well this weekend and started this clinching game with a 2 run first inning. That would be all the runs needed after control problems after receiving 4 walks and a bunt single by Matthew McLain that led to a 2 run lead.

Young Life says Lets to Go Hawks!!

On this night the fireworks came from the pitching mound with a shut out over a team that was scoring right at 8 runs coming into this Area Round battle. It was with pin-point pitching and defense that held these Blue Jay’s without any firepower.

“We played excellent defense and I just wanted to throw strikes and let them hit the ball,” Pitcher Tanner Schultz said in response of allowing just two hits in the win.

“Just throwing strikes helps a lot and then placing my pitching accurately made this a good night,” Schultz responded to what he had learned from those middle of the season games against Sinton & SA Johnson.

Canyon Lake has amassed 9 shut-outs this season as they lowered their team earned run average to 2.47 while raising their fielding percentage to .934.

There were some questionable calls or one that was downright missed but those calls would not have made a difference in this outcome. Maybe a run could have been scored but on the whole the Jays were not a lethal offensive team on this night.

Tanner Schultz dominates in win over Blue Jays

The Lake was able to get some insurance runs in the top of the 6th inning on a Chase Anderson two run single. Tyler Pauly and Matthew McLain reached base on 2 more base on balls for those scores. Needville walked 9 batters which was a continuation of the CL’s first win a day earlier.

Pitching dominance was the calling card, in giving up just 2 earned runs, in this series and now the Hawks face another team as an underdog. It will be a Panther team with only 3 losses and is tied with two other teams having the best win-loss record in Class 4A play. That will have CL as a decided underdog by those prognosticators.

The Iron is getting sharper as there are 3 teams left in CL’s bracket and they all won their respective districts. Canyon Lake, Navarro, and Calallen. Hondo was district runner-up as the Quarterfinals will begin this coming week.

What this win means for the Hawks? “It might put Canyon Lake on the map,” Schultz finished.

A team that has a 38-9 record since last year and not on anyones’ radar except their next opponent. This time it will be a Navarro Panther club.

That other side of Bracket Region IV is down to these match-ups.

Tuloso-Midway vs, Alice, both are from the same district as a 2 & 3 seed. Sinton and Sweeny are the other two teams and this will be a big battle during this next week.

             Keep Going Hawks!!

Calallen and Sinton are ranked 1st & 2nd for all 4A schools and Navarro has the 5th spot while Sweeny sits in the 8th slot. This THSBC Poll has ranked the Top 10 and this is where the teams below reside by Regions.

Region I has: Canyon (Lost) and Benbrook.

Region II has: Celina (Lost), Bullard, and Canton (Lost).

Region III has: China Spring

Region IV has: Calallen, Sinton, Navarro, and Sweeny.
