Pre-Game: Canyon Lake Hawks vs. Needville Blue Jays
Canyon Lake will have much tougher games this week in playing the Needville Blue Jays (22-7) who finished 2nd in District 25-4A.
This will be a best of three series with the first pitch being this Thursday. Next contest will be Friday and then, if needed, the final battle happens on Saturday, with all games being at La Grange High School. Both of those first two games will have first pitch at 7:00pm. That Saturday game if needed will start at 12:00 Noon.
Needville comes into this Area Round from a top heavy district with Sweeny winning and both these schools finished with only one loss coming from those other 5 teams.
There are no common opponents to have a better handle on which team might have an advantage.
The Blue Jays, during those games before district, are right over 5 runs per game and their pitching/defense averaged giving up 4 runs in those outings while finishing this part of their season with a, 10-5 record. Conversely, The Lake averaged 6 runs runs per game while giving up 3.4 runs for an apples to apples snap shot. CL’s non-district record was. 14-5.
Needville faced 10 schools that made the post-season and four of those schools either won their district or came in second place. The Hawks played 15 schools that made the playoffs and 9 schools that finished in the top two with 5 of those teams winning their district.
So that synopsis shows a tougher schedule being played by Canyon Lake. District 28-4A still has 3 teams playing in the Area Round and Needville is joined by Sweeny as the only 25-4A schools still with uniforms.
Sweeny will be matched up against Wimberley and Boerne will be playing a school that the Hawks played this season in Sinton.
Kody Gibbs is the Blue Jays number one pitcher and when district play started, Gibbs’ only losses came from their Sweeny game.
Carson Schultz will be their #2 pitcher and Schultz has been undefeated during district and post-season starts.
CL Hawks have been on a roll with their offense churning out runs while not allowing a team to get more than 3 runs since Boerne had 9 runs in that 11-9 win that swept those Greyhounds. These upcoming games will be tougher than Bi-District with these teams start to weed out teams and giving a separation from the pretenders.
Two teams that will see how they will stack up against each other for a chance to face the Navarro vs. Port Lavaca Calhoun winner..
