CL Hawk’s Sub-Varsity Finishes Home Season Today
The Hawk’s Sub-Varsity Football are both undefeated in district action as they will take on the Lampasas Badgers tonight at the Hawk Nest.
This will be their final home game of the season with hopes of keeping their unblemished district slate in tack.
The ReSporter has an updated season statistics for each squad and it shows both teams are playing a much better game than their start.
For the Junior Varsity, this crew was 1-3 to start the season and have since have won four straight with 3 of those against district foes.
In that game with Alamo Heights, Hawk JV lost a heart-breaker with a late Mule touchdown to tie the game only to lose on the point after attempt.
That was a coming out party for this group of players as they seemed to find their mojo in their running game which has been a well oiled machine ever since.
CL’s Junior Varsity have averaged right at 32 points per game since starting the season with goose eggs.
That has come via a plethora of running backs headed by Caden Rodriguez with 512 yards and 7 TD with Tyler Balderas’ 354 yds on the ground and leading the team with 156 yds receiving.
Wyatt Bates (338) and Justin Abbott (302) yards coming in next with these 4 running backs with 40 or more carries.
The CLJV crew beat Lampasas last year as freshman and if they can keep that trend going will have a chance to have some pay-back when they meet Burnet next.
That Burnet Freshman team won district last year and with an improved team looking to turn the tables on those Bulldogs.
This year’s Freshman team has been chronicled on the change of jerseys from this MVMS years to High School has been remarkable.
During the 7th & 8th grade sojourns this team had amassed 5 total victories during those formative seasons in middle school.
This year’s Freshman team stands with a 6-2 ledger with those two losses coming to start the season against Wimberley. That game had had first game jitters for both squads with offense not being at mid-season form and the Texans able to win on Hawk turnovers.
That other loss to Alamo Heights was against a good 5A team while the Hawk starting QB, Ryder Hopper still nursing an injury.
Since that loss these Freshman have a 5 game winning streak with hopes of making it 7 straight and a District Championship.
So far, the Freshman have shown a good running attack with James Garza highlighting this aspect with 845 yards on the ground and that happened with just a few carries to start the season with the Texans.
Garza is new this year as his middle school seasons were in Corpus Christi.
Carter Williams does not get as many carries but is second in rushing with 660 yards with a 12 yards per carry season thus far.
Defensively, the Hawks have 11 interceptions with Williams leading that charge with seven.
Offensively, CLFreshman have shown some passing exploits as Williams and Kaiden Lewis being those two main targets for Hopper.
Don’t forget Danny Guevara who was able to catch a batted ball from the line of scrimmage for a 2 yard gain as that stands as the 3rd leading receiver for this lineman.
