Canyon Lake Green Beat Freddie JV, 9-8 & Start District Play 1-0-1
Canyon Lake’s Green team won their first game over Fredericksburg before finishing the day with a tie against the Billies in that 2nd contest due to not enough pitching for the Billies.
It is Spring Break with an afternoon start and no where to go but home which was the decision by the Freddie Coach. Reason was not having enough pitching so he asked for a time limit double header.
So the Billies packed their bags with this game not being decided.
There was a time when CL would find it hard to have enough players for a Junior Varsity game and I’m sure that the Hawk Coaches would not have asked their opponent for a timed game because there might not be enough CL pitchers.
That is not the case for the Hawks and an excuse that The ReSporter finds interesting from a school that works in this fashion when they want to skirt a potential loss.
Both games had The Lake spotting runs for the Visitors and in that first contest the Billies were resting with a 7 run cushion going into the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Hawk Green would outscore Freddie, 9-1 from that point on coming back twice for the win.
“I did not like the way we came out,” Coach Walker said in response in letting Freddie take leads. “We will have to do a better job and get them ready for that next game when we play a double header…we haven’t played a game in a while.”
On what it feels like to be dressed in a Hawk uniform again? “I love it…coming back and having some good players…I had fun playing here and I love Canyon Lake.”
CL Green would finally awaken starting their 3rd stanza striking out twice on 9 pitches then Anderson singled to centerfield. A Weston Ackerman walk that was followed with a Ryder Hopper double scored 2 runs.
Brent Torres singled in Hopper and then a Dane Sweet double brought in two more runs and now CL would find themselves down just 3 runs, 7-4.
Gage Gibbons kept the momentum going with an 8 pitch three up/three down gem and then ran off the mound and picked up a bat and started the 4th with a single. A Williams walk and Gonzales single to left field loaded the bases.
A Billie error resulted in two more runs and CL was down one, 7-6.
Gibbons continued his mastery with another 3 up/3 down frame that led to a Hawk one run inning that would start the game over with both schools at 7 runs.
It was Sweet’s 2nd double that got things going in the Hawks next inning then a Steven Crowder safety squeeze play with the tying run, 7-7 a piece.
“I felt good and I had confidence,” Gibbons said when asked about his pitching. “I threw them a lot of curve balls.”
On thoughts as the Green team continues district play, “We are young and our line-up from 1 to 9 can put the ball in play as a group then we did our job!”
Freddie responded by opening the final inning with a double. A one out single would get the Billies back into the lead, 8-7. A double play ended any remaining threat but CL still needed two runs for a win.
Williams was first up and sent a ball to the outfield wall to open this frame with a double. A Gonzales’ sacrifice had the Hawks 90 feet away for a tying run.
Anderson had other plans sending his hit to the outfield wall for another double and now the winning run on 2nd with one out. Ackerman worked a walk and then Anderson advanced on a passed ball before Hopper got his 3rd rbi of the game on a fielder’s choice and a Hawk win.
“It’s fun playing baseball and all I wanted to do is make good contact,” Anderson said in recalling his mammoth doubles coming in both games.
Catcher Anderson then turned his attention to his battery mate, “I like catching for Gage (Gibbons) because he makes the batters look silly.”
On thoughts as the district season continues, “We want to scare them (opponents) so when we face them when we are on Varsity they will not want to play us.”
In that 2nd game, the Hawks once again started this game having to climb a 5 run deficit but this time the game was timed but a Hawk win would have been imminent since the Fredericksburg Coaches said that they did not have anymore pitchers.
That gave Canyon Lake Green the win based on a flimsy excuse. Oh, did The ReSporter also mention that Freddie Coaches also send pinch runners in for other players other than pitchers and catchers. Skirt the rules for any reason to get a Billie win or in this case tie.
Way to Go Hawks!!
