CL Hawks Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost in Sweep of the Comal Clash

Canyon Lake finished 1st in their Comal Clash Tournament after sweeping two Saturday games with London (4-3) and San Antonio Wagner (10-2). It was the Hawks 6th straight win with a Spring Break trip to Corpus Christi area playing 4 games before starting district play that next week.

“It feels good to be 4-0,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla after sweeping the tourney. “Our pitching still has a ways to go with getting ahead in the counts. Our offense has to work on being a hard out and the defense was a red flag.”
On the win against London? “We knew it was going to be a fun game to watch.”
In the fun game on Saturday, The Lake, battled with a No, 1 Ranked London Pirates who are in the 3A category. This team finished 2nd on their road to the state playoffs last year and are primed for another trip to the Austin area.
A couple of other tidbits for this 3A Team that has a woeful, 9-6 record after their game today.
Those 6 losses will not be classified as woeful after seeing their resume as these Pirates have played the teams below in the order below.

A side note that Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo did not win their next game over these Pirates. China Springs is State Ranked at 8th in 4A was another team that was beaten by this 9-6 downtrodden school.

One of those opponents was scrimmage with a ranked Calallen team that who started season ranked in the Top 5 in both polls.
Now you will have a better context of the magnitude by winning this contest.
This was a pitcher’s dual for the first 3 innings as each school could not score but in that bottom of the 4th Canyon Lake was able to scratch across two runs for their first lead.
Tanner Schultz reached base on an error on the Pirates short-stop which was followed by another error on a Jeremy Greene sacrifice bunt. Greene reached base safely on London’s 3rd baseman’s throw.
With two Hawks on base, Ty Sellers produced one of his 2 hits on this day driving in Cody Jones and then Greene would score on a balk.
The Pirates were able to escape without anymore damage on a Brody Ross line-drive out to short-stop who had an easy throw back to 2nd base doubling up Sellers.
London would take their first lead scoring 3 runs in the top of the 5th that started with a one out single which would score on an errant throw by pitcher Schultz to first base that did not have a runner. That phantom Ghost Player allowed two runs to cross the plate tying the score. Then another single ended this inning but not before claiming a lead for the Pirates, 3-2.

This being a timed game had CL with one more chance to capitalize and the Hawks did with a lead-off single for Hayden Baker who had been mired in a season long slump. This might have been his coming out party raising his batting average over 100 points with 2 hits on the day.
Baker showed off his speed moving to 2nd on a Chase Anderson sacrifice before Hunter Anderson’s double that drove in the tying score.
Hunter would score the winning run when Schultz was able to hit a screamer right up the middle for the game winning hit. From Goat to Goat (Greatest Of All Time) hit.
“I got a chance to redeem myself,” Schultz said with a sigh of relief. “I got the ‘Ghost Runner’.”
The problem with getting a ghost is having no one being able to see an apparition hence losing a lead.
In that second contest, CL scored single runs in those first 3 stanza’s and then a 5 run 5th inning gave the Hawks the separation needed before a 2 run 6th inning when Brayden Welch knocked in Tristan Roberts (walk) and Travis Parma (double) getting the game to an 8 run lead and closing the day with two victories, 10-2.
Travis Parma continues perfect fielding this season.
Canyon Lake had emptied their bench in those last innings which gives a chance for players to make a statement for more playing time. So, after a Cody Jones fly-out, Roberts would work a full-count walk and then Travis Parma took the second pitch and sent it to the left-center field gap to the wall.
On if Parma is having fun, “Of course, I’m lovin baseball.”
What was Parma thinking when called upon, “I’m thinking to get a hit and then the coaches can have a reason to trust me more. It (the double) felt good….I have been a good fielder (no errors yet) and I know that one error can hurt a team and if I did have a mistake then I can’t come to the plate to help offensively.”
CL has several players who are still making a case on how they can help as this season matures during district play. The beauty of depth and finding that diamond in the rough. Hence a double for Parma can give Coaches a chance to store those moments away.
Welch delivered a single driving in the runs needed for run ruling these Thunderbirds and ending a successful day that had CL not being afraid of no ghost!
