CL Hawks Cut Off the Buttons in, 4-3 Conquest

Now The ReSporter knows why Williams played Basketball this year. Practice-Practice-Practice! (photo by Michelle Sellers)

CL was not rattled after a 3 run 6th inning Button rally and produced 6 hits with three going for extra bases to take Central Catholic Buttons to the wood-shed, 4-3.

        Way to Cut Buttons HAWKS!!

“It was good to beat a good baseball team that is a good program,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “They didn’t fold after our strong start early and stayed tough into the last inning.”

On how well Ty Sellers has responded these past few weeks, “Ty cut it (his swing down) and had a great situational hit for us tonight….it was a good at bat. You just have to stay aggressive and we can’t sit back… but we have to take the game to them.”

Sellers has an 8 game on base streak and has had just two games this season that has not produced  a hit, walk, or been hit by a pitch.

CC Buttons came into this game ranked 5th in the state for Large Private Schools and that had, The Lake, with their most significant win of this season.

Victor & Ruth Escamilla taking in their 402nd Win.

The Hawks struck fast with Chase Anderson’s infield single and Hunter Anderson’s right field hit that set the stage for another mammoth home-run off the bat of Griffen Williams that went over the right-field fence and a CL 3 run lead, 3-0.

“I’m a little more relaxed and seeing that my timing was easier after seeing that Calallen pitcher last week,” Williams recalled after suffering a 3 strikeout sombrero in that loss. “But we will need to fix-up our defense because errors lead to runs and our hitting is good but we will need to keep it up.”

On going to right field on the home run? “He (the pitcher) threw an outside fast ball and that was my hardest hit homer….I just sat back!!”

On if Williams is having fun, “Yeah, I am this is baseball and it is my favorite sport.”

Tanner Schultz & Griffen Williams team up to pitch Hawks 14th win.

But that homer would be the extent of damage for either team through the next 4 frames. Then, Central Catholic, who had just 3 hits up thru the 6th inning had their first 4 batters reach base scoring two runs before Tanner Schultz would be summoned to help stop the Buttons offensive onslaught.

A rare relief appearance for Schultz which would require a different approach to a game than when he is a starter, “When you are warming up before a game as the starter you get to know how your stuff is working and where the ball is landing. It was tough coming from first base and knowing I would have just 9 pitches but I have a pitch that usually works and I knew that I would have to throw it has hard as I can since they had two runners on base…they are a pretty good team too.”

That tying score was on a Garza single and the go ahead score was thrown out at the plate on the same play with an Anderson to Anderson relay on a close call at the plate.

With the score tied with 3 runs a piece CL would have Williams the first player up to the plate who almost duplicated the first home run but this time over the left-field but the wind had just enough resistance to keep this ball in play for a double which put Williams in scoring position with no outs.

Schultz then sacrificed Reid Simpson (courtesy runner for Williams) to 3rd base to give Canyon Lake a chance to score in more scenarios with two outs needed for Central Catholic.

Yes, The Buttons were Out at the Plate. Good Call UMP!!

Tanner Sellers would send the Button’s right-fielder Garza to the wall for what would be the winning run on a sacrifice fly ball and Hawk win, 4-3.

Sellers continues his contribution from the plate and on this night was able to see 20 pitches on his 3 at bats snd contributing two times with those appearances.

Schultz would get the win but not before a lead-off single and sacrifice bunt that had a Button on 2nd base with one out.

No problem as Schultz used 9 pitches to strikeout the next two *buttons on this rattlesnake for a Hawk hard fought win, 4-3.

Canyon Lake will be back in action next Tuesday when Wimberley treks over the Devil’s Backbone to start District 28-4A play at the Hawk Nest.

*A Button is on the end of a new born Rattlesnake. Each time a Rattlesnake sheds their skin then they produce another Button (rattle).

Let’s Go Hawks!!
