CL Hawks had IDEA of Beating Montopolis, 7-1
Canyon Lake’s Lady Soccer team scored two goals in their first 10 minutes of the first half which was enough for a win in their Bi-District battle over Austin IDEA Montopolis, 7-1.
A turning point came early when Montopolis trailed two goals and scored with 10:13 left before half but an offside nullified that score and CL raced down the far sideline taking less than a minute later in what turned out to be a two goal momentum changer, 3-0.
From there, Canyon Lake would dominate with two more goals before half and enjoyed a 5-0 lead.
On what is the difference between this Hawk team now compared to playing those first contests in January? “During the beginning we were up and down but we have continued to get better with each game,” Head Coach Kara Stracener started. “We had our best game but we will need to get better before our next round.”
On what Coach Stracener likes about this team? “We have a lot of offensive speed!”
Speed was in a NASCAR mode with CL scoring twice to start this contest in those first 10 minutes and then at the 9:31 mark until the end of that first half scored 3 more times for their lead at intermission.

After losing a strong group of Seniors from last year’s 3rd round playoff run, it would make chemistry a key ingredient needed for this season.
Coach Stracener uses a tough schedule to start each campaign using one of The Lake’s tournaments competing in the Houston area.
For a district that just swept District 25-4A when 4th seeded SA Davenport beat 1st seeded Georgetown Gateway, 3-0 showed that dominance. That, iron sharpens iron, saying has helped CL to continue playing tough schools through this campaign which has helped in taking down IDEA Montopolis in such a dominating fashion.
Now Canyon Lake will be in Floresville on Tuesday to take on a team that the Hawks lost to, 3-1 in early January. Beeville Jones finished first in District 28-4A with a 9-0-1 record and beat 4th seeded Somerset, 3-1.
A question that needs to be answered, is Canyon Lake better than when they competed against Beeville in January.
Canyon Lake will be going into the Area round playoff as the underdog due to that earlier loss and The ReSporter asked three of the Hawk players on their thoughts and thinking on how CL will be going into this Area Round battle.
Oberholtzerr, Pace, and Pena combined for 4 Goals and 5 Assists in that IDEA take down.
“We basically didn’t know each other when the season started,” Oberholtzer stated. “But in January we started some Bonding Dinners and that helped. Before each game we chat with each other and now we all know the runs, and we will do what we did in this game before we play Beeville.”
On what was the mindset when IDEA scored which would have made this game, 2-1 before the goal was cancelled due to an offside penalty? “Coach wants us to focus after a team scores and for those next 5 minutes and try to get back and score.”
Gabi Pace was next with her assessment, “We were very distant and uncomfortable overall but we started to work together and have continued up through the end of district.”
What about CL’s district and the upcoming next round? “Our district is more challenging and we did pretty good but we will need to stay confident and united.”
Pena not only had the uneasiness with losing those seniors but also welcoming in the new faces. Coach Stracener had also changed Pena’s position from an offensive position to center fullback. With Pena’s knowledge she was able to bring the ball forward for the offense as well as having an assist.
On Pena’s thoughts when Coach changed her position, “I had to step up for the team because this game was not about me but this team. It is a tough roll to play into but coach thought it would help.”
How this team has bonded as this season has progressed, “We had some struggles with chemistry but we started to trust and have built on more things and things have started to come together.”
Now Canyon Lake will have a chance to continue their run during this post-season and taking care of Jones Beeville will be next on their climb.
Way to GO HAWKS!!
