Hawks & Gobblers Have an Even Battle in First Scrimmage
The CL Hawks first scrimmage is in the books which was battled to a draw against a Top Ten Cuero opponent.
Each school had their moments of success but in this scrimmage the defense had the highlights.
“It was a good scrimmage,” Head Coach Charley Drum assessed. “They are a good ranked team….we made some mistakes but we have time to fine tune our game.”
During that 12 minute live game portion at the end of the scrimmage, The Lake, fumbled and had 3 penalties that kept the offense from reaching the end-zone.
CL’s defense allowed two explosive plays on Cuero’s first drive of 25 and 19 yards that was helped with a 15 yard Hawk penalty. The Gobblers covered 62 yards on that drive which had the visitors with a first down on the Hawk’s 12 yard line.
The Gobbler’s next four snaps gained 4 yards and a turnover on downs at the Hawk 8 yard line.
Canyon Lake responded with an 11 play drive which was highlighted with a Hunter Anderson 20 yard run… but a false start on a 3rd down play turned a 2 yards needed to 7 yards which was ended the drive.
Cuero was able to gain just one yard on their next possession and a quick punt had CLHS setting up shop at the mid-field stripe.
A one play lost fumble for no yardage had the Gobblers with another chance needing 50 yards for that first score but The Lake’s defense only allowed 1 yard with one last chance to break the tie.
The Hawks drove Gobbler’s 22 yard line before Ethan Schedlbauer entered for a chance to win this quarter on a 39 filed goal. It was just short when the ball kissed the base of the uprights with no time on the clock.
There were some bright spots with Sophomore Carter Williams having a good all around stint as a defensive and running back.
Williams finished his freshman campaign with 8 interceptions and was able to snag another ball while shielding a Gobbler’s receiver from the ball.
Coach Drum commented, “He (Carter) played like he belonged.”
“I was a bit nervous,” Williams stated after being asked what it was like jumping up from his freshman season to being suited up for varsity. “I just concentrated on playing the game like any other game.”
On the interception play? “I was thinking I had to make the play because I didn’t want to be in trouble with the coaches.”
Canyon Lake will be back in action this next Friday with another home scrimmage this time against Elgin.
With the Wimberley game opening the season, Canyon Lake will need to work on fine tuning some of those rough spots as this Texan team has a pre-season ranking right above Cuero.
The Sub-Varsities had some good and bad plays much like the Varsity scrimmage as this night saw two evenly matched schools.
CLJV finished their session with some well played offense and defense as Sophomore Rylan Oppelt was one of many players to get their feet wet.
“This was way more physical than last year,” Oppelt exclaimed. “This different than last year and we had to make adjustments after the first set of downs as they were confusing us by playing more off the ball.”
Oppelt continued, “So we just started firing off and watched to react where they would go….it was non-stop. Our passing game warmed up and got better at the end but we (Junior Varsity will have to play more physical next week and be more fresh coming off the ball….this is more technical that our freshman season.”
And That is why these scrimmages are so important as each Hawk team had a chance to play against a good team which will the Hawks be ready for a tough season.
Way to GO HAWKS!!
