CL Hawks Freshman Win First Football Game over Freddie, 17-14
For two weeks in a row, CL’s Freshman have had a knack for entertaining the fans after a one point loss to Wimberley, the Hawks evened their record, 1-1 after a 4th quarter touchdown by Rowdy Clancy for 15 yards and, 17-14 win.
“We played well and battled by staying in the game,” Head Freshman Coach Kyle Hejnicki assessed. “We needed to get settled in and get going and by finishing the game making the big plays.”
Last week in the loss to Wimberley, The Lake’s Freshman took an early lead but could not find that one play to put them over the top….Lessoned learned by responding with a comeback after a 4th quarter Billie touchdown with 6:41 left on the clock.
Starting each half had both schools drained the first (Freddie) quarter and third quarter (CLFr).
The Billies opening drive reached the Hawk’s 8 yard line and ended with a blocked field goal try.
The Lake took the whole 3rd quarter and then was good with their field goal on the 2nd play of the 4th period. Jack Stracener’s field goal would give CL their first lead of the game.
That lead did not last long tho as these Billies took 4 plays to travel 62 yards that was highlighted with two explosive pass plays for 39 and 24 yards and a Hawk deficit, 14-10. This drive took 1:17 off the clock.
The good news was still having 6:41 for a chance to get a winning score.
Fast forward…a Really Fast Forward with CLFr needing just 2 plays to go 60 yards and what would be that winning touchdown.
Jace Morales started first with a 45 yard run and then it was capped off with a Clancy 15 yarder and a cloud of smoke, 17-14.
Bad news, only 35 seconds came off the clock.
Fredericksburg started their last drive at the 41 yard line. The Billies were able to convert a 4th down twice on this drive. That last conversion was helped by a personal foul on a tackle.
Now FHS was setting up at CL’s 23 yard line with still plenty of time to pull off a win.
Defensive End Dalton Hodges would put a kink in those scoring plans with a well timed blitz and an 8 yard sack.
Freddie had done most of their damage in this contest via the air in accumulated 146 yards on 9 completions.
But that would be the end of their good news when Eli Hammons was able to intercept that final pass which allowed CL’s Freshman to obtain their first win in High School by forming that coveted Victory Formation to run out the clock.
Offensively, Canyon Lake’s rushing attack finished with 208 yards led by Hammons (79 yds) and Morales (56 yds) that also had Ziemba Cash(ing) in with all those hard up the middle yards with 41 yards.
Canyon Lake will be home next Thursday when they welcome Boerne Champion and another tough opponent.
One thing for sure, it will be an entertaining battle.
Way to GO HAWKS!!
