CL Hawks JV Almost Climb Mountain in Loss to Champion, 35-22
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity started their 3 week of games playing larger schools with a loss an opening loss to Boerne Champion. 35-22.
The Lake will be on the road next week when they take on SA Veterans Memorial as this wicked part of the schedule continues.
After the Chargers sprinted out to a 20 point lead, the Hawks were finally awakened and responded in scoring 22 straight points to take a 4th quarter lead, 22-20.
This comeback was sprinkled by forcing some turnovers and finishing some drives with clutch passing.
CLJV’s first score came with 14 seconds left in the first half after traveling 60 yards on 11 snaps that had the whole offensive line taking QB Ryder Hopper with them across the goal line like a rugby team.
The Lake converted one 3rd and 6 play and two 4th down conversions with a pass and the aforementioned rugby touchdown.
Those first two conversions were passing plays with Hopper hitting Kaiden Lewis for 13 yards and then 27 yard completion for Mason Paananen giving CL a first down on the Chargers 12 yard line.
Noah Chandler would get his first INT on Boerne Champions next possession that gave CL one more chance for a score before halftime but Lewis’ 24 yard run ended the half on Champions 35 yard line.
The 2nd half had both schools with unsuccessful first drives and BCJV’s drive came to an end from a Paanenen interception that set CLJV needing 54 yards in making this contest a nail biter.
This drive took just 4 plays after a 42 yard pass from Hopper to Dean Platt for 42 yards leaving CLJV needing 12 yards for their 2nd score.
Canyon Lake held BCJV needing 5 yards and a turnover on downs on their next drive at the Hawks 27 yard marker.
On the Hawk’s next drive only needed to convert one 3rd down and that had Rand Ahlman scoring on a one yarder and after a two point conversion by Lewis, the Hawks led for the first time, 22-20.
CL’s drive was highlighted by another pass, this time Ty Badger hauled it in, for a 28 yard play….this drive covered 73 yards.
Explosive plays were key for Boerne Champion which the Chargers used in this win. Another large school next Thursday should give CL more learning opportunities as the ultimate goal of winning District 13-4A.
