CL Hawks Start District 13 with Win over Marble Falls, 42-07

CL Hawks start district play with a win over the Falls, 42-7.

Canyon Lake got an assist from the Marble Falls’ Coaches as the Hawks opened district play with a win over the Mustangs, 42-07.

                  Way to go Hawks!!

“Defensively we kept ourselves into the game but I was proud of our offense…you know they came out swinging and they did some things we were not expecting,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “But our offense adjusted and rolled the rest of the way.”

That first quarter was same song and same verse when The Lake was held scoreless as both slot-t teams could not get out of the gate with this game tied, 0-0 going into the 2nd period.

The Hawks had mustered 40 yards compared to 34 for the visitors as each school only competition was seeing which team would have the best punting average.

Then the Falls would finally crack the ice in scoring first to start the 2nd stanza on an impressive 86 yard drive on 11 snaps. An explosive 53 yard run catapulted the Stangs offense with an opening score and lead, 7-0.

It was the first score for MF in 3 games against CL after being shut-out in their first two games 4 years ago.

Then the Mustangs coaching staff took a gamble with an on-side kick attempt that would give CL possession on MF’s 48 yard line. That booster shot resulted in a 3 play drive with help from Justin Abbott’s 33 yard run to the 7 yard line.

Helijah Johnson’s bruising 7 yard run would tie the game allowing the visitors to have a lead for only 44 seconds.

Those gifts from the opposing coaching staff gambled again on a fourth down and needing two yards on their 40 yard line. The Hawk Defensive line would smother these Mustangs for a 5 yard loss giving CL the ball with only needing 35 yards for a score.

                       Let’s Go Hawks!!

Johnson’s first play of 20 yards sandwiched with 11 yards rushing from James Garza would give Johnson his 2nd TD and a Hawk lead that would not be challenged for the remainder of this battle, 14-7.

Canyon Lake was not through and after forcing a punt, would take 4 plays with an Anderson to Anderson (Hunter to Chase) pass and catch from 26 yards out and a halftime lead, 21-7.

The Hawks started the 2nd Half with the ball and would go the distance (83 yards) with Johnson scoring his 3rd touchdown this time with another bruising 45 yards and a quick, 28-7 lead.

Jayden Van Ausdall, Helijah Johnson & Chase Anderson dismantle Mustangs, 42-7.

Did the ReSporter say Bruising? Yes, giving pain on Johnson’s runs is a way of combining his offense and defense with yardage and making a would be tackler suffering from the consequences in trying for a tackle.

After CL’s Defense forced another punt and the Hawks drove 75 yards with a pitch to pass for Johnson who found Chase Anderson in the flat and then a tight rope run down the home-sideline to the end zone and Hawk, 35-7 advantage.

Canyon Lake had AJ Acosta putting the finishing touches on this win on his 14 yard touchdown run and final score, 42-7. This was Acosta’s 2nd game back in uniform and he will be a welcomed addition during this district time of the season.

The Hawks were all business thanks to those hand-outs from MFalls as CL will be in action next week for a home game and maybe a chance in scoring during those first 12 minutes of a game.

Way to Go Hawks!!
