Boys: CL Hawks Finish 2nd in Gold Bracket
Garrett Spruiell clamps down on defense as this year’s team has 2nd best points allowed per game.

Canyon Lake’s Boys Basketball finished the Wimberley Tournament with a 3-2 record and will now prepare for district play that will begin when the Hawks welcome Davenport for their first home district contest.

The Boys will follow the Sub-Varsity Hawk teams that have a 5pm tip-off in the main gym.
Last week the Hawks lost an overtime game at Fredericksburg, 42-36 and will look to get back on the winning track
The Lake was able to reach double digit wins and have 2 more wins than their total for the previous two seasons when CL was only able to amass 4 wins in each of those campaigns.
One of the most impressive wins came against a San Diego team that entered the tourney sporting a, 13-2 record. Canyon Lake was able to forge a, 55-50 win
In those first 2 quarters neither team had more than a 6 point lead and that was CL that reached that mark, 27-21 with 2 minutes before halftime. Diego outscored the Hawks, 6-2 to end that period and Canyon Lake holding onto a 2 point lead, 29-27,
All but one Hawk had contributed in the points column during those two quarters with Mario Aguilar leading the way with 8 points.
CL was led by Carter Williams who shot 4 for 5 in the 2nd half and 2 for 3 from the foul line. Williams finished with 14 points with 3 blocked shots.

Canyon Lake was able to work their largest lead (8 points) twice and the last time with 3:30 remaining in the game, 47-39.
Finishing the fourth quarter shooting 10 out of 12 free throws was pivotable in this win as Jaxson Jeter clutch ending this game with two free throws during those final seconds that left San Diego needing two possessions for a win or overtime.

Canyon Lake’s game with Northern Oaks was a dominating affair for 3 of the 4 periods when the Hawks outscored NO by a comfortable, 58-30 score. It was during that 2nd quarter the Hawks went cold with 2 points scored 30 seconds into that quarter before going scoreless going into halftime.

Head Coach Monte Cole had some motivating words during that intermission that had CL scoring 20 more points for the final 22 point win.
It was a Carter Williams’ night with an impressive double (20 points) double (15 rebounds) while chipping in 4 assists and 3 steals.
Jaxson Jeter wasn’t that far behind with his game as he finished with 11 points, 4 assists and 5 steals.
Another Sophomore, Dalton Stromquist, showed some promise as this season continues to mature with his first double digit scoring game with 12 points with 2 steals and 2 blocks for the big man.
The Hawks finished with 42 rebounds and shooting 42% from the floor. The team had 14 assists and steals to go with a respectable 13 turnovers.

In the Hawks 3rd win in this Wimbo tourney the Lago Vista team was stifled with a relentless defense in being held to just 13 points in the 2nd half that would give Canyon Lake enough firepower for a 6 point victory.
Jacob Holland had his best scoring game of the season with 9 points while Carter Williams was able to finish with a double digit 10 points.

CL had a hard time getting separation from LV but was able to reach a 9 point advantage during the 2nd period, 18-9 but then a cold spell had the Pirates outscoring the Hawks, 13-4 to end that quarter and a Hawk one point lead, 23-22.
Both schools scored 8 points to start the 2nd half as the lead was threatened just once when Lago took a quick one point lead, 24-23 with 6:49 but was followed with a Griffen Williams bucket off an assist from Jaxson Jeter.
Jeter is leading CL with 49 assists and only need 12 more to pass 10th place Rory Preiss with his 60 assists back during the 2017 season. Jeter is 17th going into district play for that season list.
This win was not secured until a Jeter free throw with 15 seconds remaining that helped ice the contest with Lago needing two possessions to take the game. CL’s defense held Vista to just one made basket during that final 8 minutes of play that played a major role in this conquest,
