The Energizer Hawks kept going and going in win over Fredericksburg, 52-45 with plenty of offense for both sides.

                      Let’s Go Hawks!!

It didn’t take long to rev up those batteries when Carter Williams started the fireworks on his first play of the game and taking off down the sideline for 75 yards. The play took 18 seconds which opened a box of Eveready Batteries for the remainder of this contest.

Williams was Eveready on this night chewing up real estate by sections rather than acres in totaling 257 yards on 4 of his scoring plays.

Asked if he had fun on this night, Head Coach Charley Drum stated, “I don’t think it was fun but it was exciting and my blood pressure needs to be checked…it was a good football game against two good programs with some great kids on both sides that had trouble stopping each other.”

Coach Drum continued, “We handled the adversity well and there was a bunch of ups and downs in every quarter and I give Fredericksburg credit… they fought and were down by 24 points and answered with three touchdowns and we answered back and got that big turnover. Our kids will learn from this as our goal from last week was to get better and we did this week and we will have to get better for next week.”

When asked bout CL’s goal for this part of the schedule, “Yeah, we just have to get better from week to week so we are hitting our stride by district or hopefully before district.”

Canyon Lake has a tough pre-district schedule with 5A Boerne Champion next and coming to the Hawk Nest this next week.

Freddie was not shy on offense either as these Billies opened their offense in a more conventional way taking 11 plays for 75 yards and with an extra point conversion took the lead, 7-6.

The next two possessions had CL short on a 4th down conversion at Freddie’s 24 yard line and the Hawk defense would force one of the first 3 Billies’ punts on this night.

                         GO HAWKS!!

That was when Mr. Williams took off for a 57 yarder to the house on the 2nd one play and this score regained the lead, 13-7 with 2:43 remaining in the first stanza.

That had FHS using 6 snaps and scoring, with 12 seconds left in the quarter, on a 24 yard pass play…the Billies also had a 40 yard pass that was crucial on this set of downs and regained on what would be their last lead in this game, 14-13.

The Lake were back in action with a 5 play drive and Trevin Cutrer helped fuel this score covering 74 yards which had several Billies nipping at Cutrer before stopping him just shy of the goal line. James Garza (77 yards rushing) would punch it in.

With a, 21-14 advantage, Fredericksburg was intent to keep up with this high flying Hawk team and moved the ball to CL’s 9 yard line. With a 4th and 1 yard needed, the Billies would be confident enough to go for it based on both defenses struggling up to this point.

Enter, Linebacker Michael Anderson who shot the gap forcing a 2 yard loss and a change of downs for the Good Guys.

“I just saw the gates open and filled my hole and I blew them up there and God is Good,” Anderson recalled. “I just did my job for the team and we anchored and escaped and did a good job.”

Time for some Ice Cream HAWKS!!

It was the Eveready Hawks turn and ready by taking two explosive plays when, James Garza covered 27 yards and then Mr. Williams would go 62 yards and a Hawk two score lead, 28-14.

CLHS’ defense forced another punt and now a more conventional slot-t scoring drive which drained the rest of the half. This set of downs was 14 plays and the result had a 24 yard field goal from Jayden Van Ausdall and Hawk, 31-14 half-time lead.

A question many Hawk fan would have after watching that opening game in Wimberley would be? Can Canyon Lake keep it up?

                                 Go Hawks!!

The game’s 2nd half had some more back and forth scoring when CL would respond after the Billies opened the 3rd quarter scoring but still having a 10 point deficit, 31-21.

Canyon Lake? How bout an 8 play 68 yard drive with a twist to this plot by using the airwaves. This drive had QB Steven Crowder with two completions to Harris Gilliam for a combined 41 yards and that throw for 13 yards was through a tight window at the goal line for a score.

“At first I thought he would be wider out,” Crowder talked bout that pin-point play. “But then when I got the ball and I found him all the way across the field and it was perfect.”

Gilliam had the best night for any receiver (8 catches for 174 yards) in Hawk history as he passed the all-time best receiver, Eric Nelson who was on top sporting a 161 yard game during his 2009 season.  CL’s first 5 years had passing being a main ingredient for their offense.

This night was still Eveready strong when CL’s defense forced another punt and then a Crowder to (you guessed it) Mr. Williams for a 63 yard catch and run. 45-21 Hawk lead.

    Canyon Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

Then FHS would score on 3 consecutive drives and a Hawk vicarious 2 point lead, 45-43 with 5:22 still remaining.

Canyon Lake would have 5 scoring drives that had 2 or fewer snaps and that would be a final answer and game when Crowder saw Gilliam open down the middle of the field with the closest Billie Goat 10 yards away. It was a 75 yard catch and run for the final score and Hawk win, 52-43.

A record night on several levels as both teams combined for 1166 yards and lots of batteries thrown all over the field.

Now Canyon Lake will see if they will be Eveready for next week!!

Way to Go and Going and Going and Going Hawks!!
