Hawk’s Opening Day Win is Devine, 12-3

Canyon Lake’s Baseball won their 8th opening day game in a row with a dismantling of the Devine Warhorses, 12-3.

“The bats came alive and the pitcher’s threw strikes,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “The defense needs to be shored up. Every error is a window of opportunity for our opponents and good teams will exploit that.”

CLake rushed out to a 3 run lead before those dastardly errors to two runs in the 3rd and their last run in that following frame. Canyon Lake still led, 4-3 but broke out this contest in those last three innings scoring 8 runs and 6 during that 6th inning.

It was an extra base hit parade with 8 of the Hawks 15 hits went for extra bases with 7 doubles and a homer for newcomer Cullen Barnhart who chipped in with one of those doubles.

Carson Walker did not do his last name any favors as walking was not his motif of getting around first base after 3 of his 4 hits went for doubles knocking in 3 Hawks matching Barnhart’s 3 rbi’s.

Ryan Rena and Bryce May also had multiple hits along with Brennan Hughes 3 singles helping put this game in a win column.

Cade Johnson and Hayes Holladay combined for a no-hitter while giving up 2 walks and striking out 9 Warhorses that were not led to water on this night.

Those errors led to all of Devine’s runs and a good start before The Lake heads to a perennial power Sinton team on Thursday with a 2pm first pitch.

Canyon Lake will start their first tournament in that game followed with Port Lavaca later that same day.

A good start with some tough competition in the Sinton Tourney will give the Hawk’s coaching staff plenty of ideas on what will need work as pre-district battles continue.
