Canyon Lake finished another year with a winning record but just short in district play as front runner La Vernia rushed out to a lead and held on, 9-5 on Senior night at the Hawk Diamond.

For Senior Night, both Lizzy Henderson and Kelsey Ahrens were honored as they finished their career in sports for Canyon Lake.

Ahrens took that honor one step further as she deposited a home run over the left field fence that also gave her the all time rbi stat finishing with 76 rbi’s on this night.

The Hawks had as many errors as hits, and those errors will give a team like La Vernia all they need to keep a lead and winning.

CL did have 5 unanswered runs during the 4th and 5th innings, to claw back to within 2 runs of the Bears before the Hawks ran out of innings and games on this beautiful night under the stars.

This is the second year in a row of having just two seniors to hang up their cleats, which will also help in stock piling more softball players in the system.

Replacing Ahrens, lock at third base, and Henderson’s, I will play anywhere you need me, positions will be the first order of business as next year will be arriving before you know it.

Kat Weber and Lauren Mentzer both led CL with 2 hits in this game, as these two will have multiple years to help bring the Hawks in position for a playoff run next season.

Weber improved immensely from the plate as she has played both years on Varsity.

Weber Stats ab r h bi 2b bb so ave obp
 Sophomore 74 21 29 16 2 6 8 .392 .444
 Freshman 64 14 17 5 2 11 10 .266 .382

With 10 more at bats, Weber between the two yeas you can see the difference and progress from a Freshman to Sophomore that will be something special as she continues her stay at Canyon Lake.

Weber finished the season with a 5 game hitting streak and 9 hits in those games with a .474 batting average and scoring 7 runs.

“I like to set the mood and get hits and batting in the second spot makes me better,” Weber said eluding with confidence. “I’m different, I don’t want to know what the pitcher is doing in the circle, I just want to go up and hit.”

On what Weber needs to do for next year, “I have to take leadership and I just want to come out with confidence and make some things happen.”

What makes Mentzer’s numbers look even better is how she improved during the district schedule versus the regular season games.

Mentzer ended her season on a 6 game hitting streak and nine hits in those games with a .421 batting average.

 Regular Season Stats 24 4 5 7 0 2 4 .208 .269

Mentzer finished this season with the top batting average against district opponents just passing Carly Dubois (.381) in her last game.

Canyon Lake just could not hold La Vernia from scoring as the Bears have a strong line-up from top to bottom and adding those errors made this game go down in flames.

There will be more stats shared in the next couple of weeks but this Hawk team will be need to improve on their fielding, pitching, and hitting with more power. That will always help.

Senior Moments:
Kelsey Ahrens
On what she was thinking at the start of this game: “I told myself that I was going to hit a home run in this game. I did not have a good game in Wimberley and that was not going to happen in this game.”

On what her key to success was as a player: “No matter the outcome, I went all out and that is all I can ask of myself.”

On what she would like to instill in those younger softball players: “Work hard with no regrets and treat every game like it will be your last.”

Lizzy Henderson
On what it meant playing these last 4 years: “It was great and I was lucky to have my sister to help get me into the swing of high school and softball…..that gave me comfort.”

On what wisdom you would like your teammates to learn: “Give your heart on every play and in every game, because it is over quick.”

Thanks for sharing your joy for the game of softball throughout your careers and The ReSporter will miss covering your exploits in the coming years.

Now go hit a HOME RUN in your life objectives!!
