MV Hawks Softball Lose First Game of Season, 12-5
The Mountain Valley Hawks lost their first game this year when Smithson Valley MS took a 3 run first inning lead and never looked back, Thursday night at the Hawk Field, 12-5.
MV did rally to get within one run when Bailey Bryan and Grace Hinze both reached base in the third inning and came around to score to pull within striking range, 3-2.
“We were not as focused,” Bryan said. “We just need to keep everything in front of us and keep in the game. If we play smarter and know what we have to do on the bases then we can be more aggressive.”
Bryan is one of the few Hawks that is playing as an 8th Grader and will soon be playing on the field as a high school player this time next year.
“I am excited for high school and I played with some of those players last year,” Bryan closed.
Marley Carrizales had a perfect suicide squeeze play and Madison Puente did not waste any time with a one pitch single to bring in the second run of the stanza.
SVMS would answer the next inning with 4 runs after some costly errors that helped make the inning much longer than needed.
The Hawks started another rally in the 6th inning when Maddi Morris started with a full count walk that set up three consecutive singles from Kyra Gonzales, Madison Churbe, and Bryan to help get that score closer.
“A lot of the girls were getting down and we had to get things right as we went into that last inning,” Gonzales surmised. “We did not come into this game with a lot of ‘ummphh’.”
Mountain Valley will need to find some ‘ummphh’ on their way to the game next week so they can get back on the right track for this season.
Running errors were the culprit in that final inning as the Rangers got all three outs on those pesky little things.
The Ranger pitcher did not record one out in that inning as Mountain Valley has two walks and four singles when the last running error resulted in that 3rd out.
Madison Puente started and ended the game and in the circle and was at her best as she struck out the last two batters for the 1-2-3 inning.
“I wasn’t snapping my hips when I was pitching during the first part of the game,” Puente said while evaluating why she came back to the circle as a dominating pitcher. “I would have done better, but that first inning, their hitting just got into my head. Then when I came back in I just started trying to get my spots and then my speed.”
Now Mountain Valley will play their last home game, May 14th, against Canyon starting at gameat 6pm.
