MVMS Beats Canyon MS with Two Come-Backs, 9-8

Brandon Robinson and Derek Peters were both instrumental in 2 comebacks over CMS

Mountain Valley Baseball team had a different ending to their game on Thursday against Canyon than the previous week in their loss to Smithson Valley Middle School.

First, the Hawks won, but more than that was how these two games played out.

Last week, MVMS had an incredible comeback in their last inning, only to lose the game in the first extra inning after the comeback by two runs.

This game, the Hawks not only forged back like their previous week, but on this night took things further and had a two for one in regards to coming back.

“One of those games that gives our team some experience as they want to win and they never quit,” Head Coach Raymond Amaro said. “In our very first game with Canyon we came back and we had to focus in practice and when we had bad things happen we needed to be positive.”

MV was behind, 1-5 going into the bottom of the 5th inning and proceeded to score 5 runs to take a, 6-5 lead.

Canyon Middle School then responded by scoring 3 runs in their next inning to take their lead back, 6-8.

Last week, MVMS had a 7 run comeback but then lost the game that next inning as they could not muster enough offense to respond again like this game with Canyon.

The Hawks matched the Cougars 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th and it was game-set-match for Mountain Valley and happy faces compared to frowning as was the case a week earlier.

Mountain Valley did not get going until the 4th inning as they scored their first run bringing the deficit to 3 runs, 4-1.

The Hawks would then open the flood gates as they scored all totaled 9 runs in those last three innings.

Brandon Robinson came on in the last part of the game to get the win as Robinson also responded with a key hit to help in the comeback.

“At first I was sceptical about taking off,” Robinson said while commenting on what he was thinking as he scored the winning run on a pass ball. “But when I saw the ball so far from the catcher, I just started running.”

“I also heard my coach and the crowd yelling so that helped in making my decision,” Robinson finished. “This was exciting and I just hope it flows over into our tournament this week-end.”

Derek Peters was another player to score some runs in the comeback that now is becoming a norm for Mountain Valley as they seem to want those dramatic games that are won during the latter part of the game.

“This was very exciting,” Peters quipped. “We don’t have very many wins but this will get us hyped up and excited about our games this week-end.”

On commenting on the slow starts, Peters surmised, “I am not real sure why we start slow….I don’t feel we felt all that fire when the game starts and then we play harder when we get behind.”

“We came out and had to bring out the fire and just play our butts off,” Peters closed.

Mountain Valley is high on drama, but coming out with fire might mean using matches instead of rubbing the sticks together for a quicker result for S’mores in those later innings.
