JV Hawks Lose First Game of Season to Blanco JV, 24-14
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity went through the motions for their opener with Blanco as turnovers spelled dome for any chance of a comeback in their 10 point loss, 24-14.
The Hawks had the ball first and after three running plays with the longest being 2 yards a punt was needed.
“Turnovers and we did not do a good job of executing,” Head JV Coach John Barthels started. “We practiced against the Varsity this week and we just did not come out with that same intensity and did not respond well.”
Blanco then marched down to the Hawk 2 yard line when they fumbled away a chance for their first score of the season and CL staved off that early damage.
Canyon Lake then responded with a 98 yard drive taking 14 plays with Running Back Lee Stafford took the inside hand off slicing into the end zone for a Hawk, 8 point lead when Stafford had the honors with scoring the 2 point conversion.
The drive was helped out with a 42 yard Joseph Ruiz run as the play converted a third down and 17 yards for a first.
Ruiz not only got the 17 yards but another 25 yards to boot, he finished with a team leading 81 yards.
For the game Ruiz averaged 11 yards per carry as he also tacked on 31 yard run on CL’s second touchdown drive to answer Blanco’s first lead of the game in the third quarter.
The Hawks drove 64 yards on their second scoring drive, but with a failed two point try, the good guys found themselves down 2 points and still having to play catch-up.
On Blanco’s next set of downs the Hawks held the Panthers with a run stuffing tackle for a loss on the Hawk’s 6 yard line and with over 6 minutes left in the game a chance to take the lead and go home.
Blanco had other plans as CL threw an interception on the 3rd play of the drive having the Panthers pitching their tent on the Hawk 28 yard line.
Six plays later, Blanco scored their insurance points and what turned out to be the final score.
Canyon Lake did have one more chance but a fumble in the air that was caught by a Panther lineman had the Hawks tackling that Panther on the 3 yard line saving a touchdown but spelling that doom word in the offing.
Blanco’s passes were few but deadly in this game as 3 of their 4 receptions converted first downs and kept drives alive.
Meanwhile, the Hawk’s passes were few and ineffective on this night as the curtains came down on this first game of the season.
The Hawks will be at home next Thursday when they take on Smithville at 7pm.
Go Hawks!!
