The season opener for the 2015 Freshman football season kicked off Friday at Lago Vista’s brand new beautiful High School as the Canyon Lake Hawk freshman took on the Lago Vista JV Gold Vikings.

The Vikings won the coin toss and at the time no one knew, but it would be the Vikings last time in which they won anything.

On the opening possession for Lago Vista, on a 3rd and nine, Trenton Lorett swooped down and picked off a pass on the Canyon Lake 42 yard line and sent the Vikings packing.

On the Hawk’s first possession after a false start from an eager offensive line, the O-line plowed head first into the Vikings defense on three consecutive plays and drove the defense back 55 yards when Lorett scored from 5 yards out and added his own 2 point conversion. 8-0 Hawks.

Lago Vista’s second drive halted on a three and out in quick fashion. The Vikings wished that they could held onto the ball longer because on the first play of the second Hawk possession, Conner Rose ripped off a 53 yard run which looked like a pin ball making its way through the bumpers and stops as most of lineman were down field picking up key blocks.

The Vikings started to row in the same direction when they scored on a six play 44 yard gaunt down field on the second team Hawk defense to hang 6 points on the board.

However when the Hawks got the ball back, Greyson Lee picked his way through the Viking defense for 75 yards and a touchdown as this was the only play for this drive.

The Hawks 2 point conversion came up short. 22-6, Hawks.

The Hawks got the ball back after another three and out from Lago Vista and added another 85 yards to their total with three runs by Cade Dunnavant, Conner Rose and Landry Moore. Moore scored from 23 yards out to finish the short 85 yard drive.

Halftime score, 28-6 Hawks.

The offense had the Vikings heading backwards all day, like a dolphin out of the water, on its tail at a water show.

Canyon Lake had three more offensive possessions of 59, 42 and 56 yards.

The Offense tallied up 452 yards on 19 carries for an average of 23.8 yards per carry and one pass for 10 yards, with one fumble but recovered it and had no punts.

While the offense had the ball to produce these numbers it was the defense completely shutting down the Vikings.

Jeremiah Soliz, Greyson Lee, Brandon Cassard and Andrew Kullberg led the Hawks no non-sense defense in annihilating the Vikings offense.

The big “D” held the Vikings to 26 carriers for 53 yards for a 2 yard average, one TD and an interception, and punted five times.

The entire Hawk defense at one time or another hand a handful of Viking blue jersey all day long.

A new freshman addition and starting outside line backer Andrew Kullberg played his first game for Canyon Lake and made his début a memorable one for sure.

Kullberg had 6 tackles and 3 assists and was a game changer for the Hawk defense.

“Coach said always think positive and improve, and if you miss a tackle get up and keep playing until you hear the whistle,” said Kullberg.

As the game progressed the Hawks were teeing off at will and penetrating through the O-line causing disruptions in the back field all day on this beleaguered Viking offense.

When asked what he liked best about football Kullberg’s eye lit up and said very enthusiastically, “I love the adrenaline rush you get when you tackle someone; it’s the best feeling in the world. I definitely love playing defense versus offense; we get to knock people down!”

Trenton Lorett – 4/43 yards – 2TD –INT- 1 pass 10 yard reception- 2 point conv.

Triston Chacon – 3/50 yards

Conner Rose – 5/100 yards – 2 TD- 2 point conv.

Landry Moore – 4/111 yards -1 TD

Greyson Lee – 2/110 yards – 1 TD

Cade Dunavant – 1/38 yards

As the Hawks continue to improve from past week’s scrimmages and practices, the freshmen will still have some sharpening to do as teams get tougher on their schedule down the road to a long season ahead.

If this team can focus each week on their coaching lessons and not get ahead of themselves mentally by keeping things in perspective, it would appear that there can be potential for a great season as the, Mean Green Machine, starts off this season with a total win.

Next week’s game has the freshman at home against the Smithville Tigers.
