Coaches Corner with Cross Country’s Mary Beth Gallagher
Coaches Corner with Cross Country Coach Mary Beth Gallagher
This is an exciting time for Cross Country at Canyon Lake as last year the Boy’s team qualified for the post season for the first time.
CC lost some runners but a restocking of more good athletes looks in the offing as we catch up with Coach Gallagher.
The ReSporter: Hey Coach, what are your expectations for this year’s Cross Country team?
Coach Gallagher: “So far we have only competed in one meet and it was mostly 6A schools. It was the Unicorn Classic in New Braunfels.”
The Resporter: What can you tell us about how the team competed.
Coach Gallagher: “While we did not have any high school members medal, we looked impressive for a small school.”
The ReSporter: How impressive?
Coach Gallagher: “We had all seven boys who ran for the varsity division beat Nash’s (Opperman) and Duncan’s (Coleman) time for this meet last year by over a minute.”
The ReSporter: That is impressive, who were some of those students?
Coach Gallagher: “The boys to look out for this year are led by Seniors, Calvin Graves, Duncan Coleman, Wyatt Wiggins, and Adam Wiewell.” They are all returners from that Regional Qualifying team last year.”
The ReSporter: What about the lower grade competitors?
Coach Gallagher: “We have two freshman that are killing it, they are Jaren Marmalejo and Matt Bell. They finished first and third out of our boys respectfully.”
The ReSporter: What are some of the goals this group of runners have set?
Coach Gallagher: “This should be a very exciting season for the men as they have set their goals on making it to regionals again and determined to put up more competitive scores this time around.”
The ReSporter: I can tell you are excited Coach…
Coach Gallagher: “This is by far, top to bottom the strongest most complete team I think Canyon Lake has had on the men’s side.”
The ReSporter: Tell us about the girls on the Cross Country Team.
Coach Gallagher: “As far as the girls go, we are also very excited as their times were also much faster than this time last season.”
The ReSporter: Gives us some of the names for this team.
Coach Gallagher: “They are led by Seniors Jillian Schley and Rosie Quintero…but we are still searching for a few other girls to help this year at the Varsity level, but we know that Kaylie Yuill and Amira Allen are up for the challenge.”
The ReSporter: It looks promising for Cross Country this year and for the future.
Coach Gallagher: “The middle school (Mountain Valley) runners have been training with us prior to the start of the school year and there were two boys who medaled at the meet, Kyle Yuill and Jakob Christianson…Their future is very bright as well.”
The ReSporter: Thanks for the update Coach and keep us posted and if any of your parent’s have cameras with pictures of the runners in meets then The ReSporter is all in on covering this year’s team.
Go Hawks!!
