Hawk Nation celebrating after a Hawk Sweep over Navarro

Canyon Lake’s Volleyball team is on a roll after their Tuesday win over Navarro, but if you have not noticed the Hawks also have the Freshman and Junior Varsity clubs that have also gone undefeated in District 26-4A.

Both teams beat Navarro as the Freshman swept with a 2-0 match and the JV had a 2-1 victory.

For that JV game on Tuesday, the Hawks were night and day difference between their first and second sets.

“The difference comes down to warm-ups,” Head JV Coach Megan Helmey said calmly. “It takes this team time to get focused.”

Canyon Lake JV was off and on in that first set as both teams never could get a commanding lead as the Hawks just were not able to take advantage in the sluggish first set.

If you were late to the party and you had walked in during that second set, then you would ask how bad did the Hawks win the first game.

“When they get fired up they are good,” Coach Helmey stated while recounting how this team dominated in that second set. “Riley Mickey was a very strong server and gave us separation as she had at least 5 or 6 aces.”

CL was good in that second set as they ran off the first 10 points in and dominated all the way in tying up the match, scoring a 25-10 win.

“We get comfortable and don’t fight as hard,” Niestemski said. “We need to get started earlier and get our focus with more concentration.”

Canyon Lake’s JV has several girls that can get kills and the Panthers just did not have depth to stay and make a game after their first set win.

Juniors Kaylie Duke and Niestemski were joined with Alysha Perez in attacking from all over the court in this win.

Duke and Niestemski each finished with 7 kills that helped seal the deal against these Panthers.

“My hitting and getting more kills are some of the things I will need to be working on as the season continues,” Niestemski said with wisdom. “We need to be more consistent in getting the ball over the net.”

That third set was a back and forth affair until Canyon Lake started their dominance like was performed during the second set and a win in three that helped in staying undefeated for district play.

There will be a Wimberley match in a week where both teams might still be bringing an unblemished record to the courts for an inside track for a district title.

“This game will give us confidence and we will pull things up for the rest of our district games,” Coach Helmey parted. “They are starting to ride that wave and we hope to continue.”

Just another team that has performed well as each grade seems to be playing at a high level and the Hawk fans can start to see that this pipeline of players can give Canyon Lake more years of competitive games and competition for District 26-4A foes.
