Hawk Volleyball: SWEEP

Head Coach Kim Paisley excitedly talking to the Victors over Wimberley

Head Coach Kim Paisley excitedly talking to the Victors over Wimberley

***Canyon Lake had several games that The ReSporter would like to bring back to life during this month of May as we draw another year of sports reporting to a close.

Hope you enjoy the flashbacks.

The Hawks were the first team in 18 years to beat Wimberley during district play at the Texans home court.

Wimberley had lost an earlier game to Navarro, but that contest was played in Navarro as the Panthers beat the Texans 3-1.

CL upped that win by Navarro by not only winning at Wimberley but being the first district team to sweep this Volleyball powerhouse getting a 3-0 whitewash.

Things to note that made this one of the top wins for the Hawks this year:

Wimberley had not lost a game within a set ever to the Hawks. Canyon Lake lost 25-27 over 4 years ago which would be as close to a win for CL, ever.

Wimberley had won 76-0 in contests and a whopping 228 games in a row winning streak since CL started playing in 2008, coming into this year’s season for district games.

Since the Texans had an 18 year district winning streak then you can do your own math on how dominant this school has been throughout all these years.

Think about the age of the Hawk players and you now know that none of the Hawks had even been born when Wimberley last lost a district game.

===============================================

Canyon Lake swept the Wimberley Texans for their first win ever over this perennial powerhouse, 25-22, 25-21, and 25-20.

The win keeps the first place Hawks in District 26-4A on top of the heap as they have just one more game left in the first round at home this Friday against La Vernia.

“A 5-0 record is a good start,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said. “La Vernia will be scrappy on defense.”

Coach Paisley, as you can see, was already thinking of her game plan for CL’s Friday match-up at the Hawk Nest.

“I think we had a mission tonight from starting to finishing,” Coach Paisley continued. “We were more fluid with our passes and offensively we were stronger.”
CL improves to 25-8 and now has the best percentage at this time of the year ever as well as being undefeated on the road this season (6-0).

First win and first set win over the Texans and Wimberley being swept for the first time in at least 8 years but maybe longer in District play.

The Texans have won a district championship for the last 18 years in a row. This loss also gave WHS their second loss in District 26-4A for this campaign.

Canyon Lake, with this win, now sports their longest winning streak presently at 13 with their last loss coming at the hands of Keller Central over a month ago.

This game with Wimberley would play out the same in each set as both teams would be tied at the 8-8 mark and with the second and third set, separation happened right when the Hawks got their 15th point.

That third set, the Texans scored the first 4 points but CL responded with a 5 point rally that kept the game tight until Sophomore Faith Hasness served a four point rally allowing the separation and eventual win.

Hasness served 9 of the points in that 3rd set as Bailey Drum started her kill streak with 5 during the last half of that final set.

The set was tied at 12 all as the Hawks closed out this historic sweep with a 13-8 advantage.

The ReSporter had both Bailey Drum and Addison Farley with 13 kills a piece in the match.

“This felt great,” Senior outside hitter Farley said matter of fact. “Our conditioning helps us to finish and when we practice we work on that part of our game.”

Canyon Lake had a great all around game from several players as each players strengths were accented from Hannah Wunderlich’s serves to Alexis Robinson’s blocks.

“I just start thinking that I want the ball and block….I just go get the ball,” Blocker Robinson said in response to how she readies herself for getting those important blocks during a set. “It feels great for finally getting this win and we really want to use this game in starting to build our tradition.”

CL did win and this game was different than the win over Navarro last week.

“I did not think we spread our offense like we did with Navarro,” Coach finished. “We should have but we got them off their offensive game.”

The Hawk’s front line and back line had their moments during this night and one play that stands out is how Canyon Lake uses Emma Gray on a post play.

That is a kill that has Gray coming around for a set from the outside where she has the whole court to inflict her damage.

“We call that the front row surprise,” Gray said. “It really gives you a good feeling when we do that post play.”

That play was a rally starter as it looks so powerful when executed and can play on the physche on the opponent.

Next on the docket will be La Vernia, another team that has had CL’s number through the years.

“Just because we are, 5-0, does not mean we can take them lightly,” Farley said astutely.

You know that Coach Paisley smiled when she read what Farley just said and knowing Coach the Hawks will ready to get their 3rd win in a row over the Bears at home this Friday.

Go Hawks!!
