Canyon Lake started their season in grand style as they walloped Gonzales, 70-32 on their first District 26-4A game.

“We did exactly what we needed to do and played well,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said with a smile. “We did a good job of looking like we were playing during the first of this season.”

The Hawks had 3 players breaking double digit scoring as Rory Preiss finished with a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

“We went out and did what we needed to do and played hard and did not sink to their level of play,” Preiss pressed.

Will Gray and Heath McDonough were the other two players in scoring but just missing a double-double by a combined 3 rebounds.

On what Gray was thinking after leaving the court, “Get ready for Navarro because they will be a totally different team.”

CL has now placed 6 players that have passed the 100 point marker as district play gets started, giving opposing teams, trouble on who they might want to stop offensively.

                Brandon Ward 111

                Will Gray 106
                Heath McDonough 104

Canyon Lake never trailed in this contest as Will Gray started the game with a 3 pointer and the closest the Apache’s would get was one point twice in that opening first quarter.

CL finishes with 10 unanswered points to close out that first quarter, helping the good guys to rush out to a 19-7 advantage.

Seven of the first ten Hawks scored in that opening stanza helping Canyon Lake to spread mayonnaise all over their bread for this win.

Canyon Lake saw their 13 point halftime lead balloon another 14 points which closed the chapter on this first win in district in that third quarter.

“By being aggressive we were fast but not in a hurry,” Gray said in responding to the crispness on offense. “We got our points in transition today.”

The Hawks have never held a district opponent to less than 40 points (last done against Bandera during the 2013 season) which gives you an idea of how CL played on both ends of the court.

Smart basketball helps as the Home team committed just 13 turnovers which also saw a season high in rebounds and shots taken.

“Turnovers were not a problem,” Coach Chapman assessed. “It makes it easy to get our plays off when you keep your turnovers down.”

This 28 point win will go down as the largest margin in Hawk history in district play.

Another good way in starting the year and getting that bad taste out of your mouth after that poor showing in the Fredericksburg Tournament earlier this week.

We know we are able to play better and we will take this confidence to our next game,” Preiss said with resolve. “We did not play to our ability in the Fredericksburg tournament and we had a good week of practice.”

Now Canyon Lake will hopefully feed off of this game and get another adrenaline shot on the road against Navarro next Tuesday.
