Canyon Lake Hawks played their postponed Friday game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, but not getting those needed hits resulted in a loss to Marble Falls, 8-4.

“We are not that far away,” Head Baseball Coach Trent Dunavant fielded. “We need to put our game all together, when we have something working then we will be lacking in another part of our game. In our last game we did not have a good fielding game but good pitching. In this game we fielded the ball well but our pitching was not up to par.”

There is good news however as this Mustang team had lapped CL earlier this year in the season with a short run ruled game and seeing how well the Hawks fielded the ball was a welcomed sight and playing a full 7 inning game and keeping the contest within a hit here or there for a rally gave the team hope.

The bad news is not responding on the mound and getting those hits with runners on the pond ended this game with a 4 run loss.

Senior Dylan Hodges did coax a run when he walked after 2 outs in the second inning.

A Hodges stolen base and an overthrow on a CJ Parrish hit helped score that first run without a base hit.

Canyon Lake was able to get 2 more runs in the 4th inning when Hayden Reed walked on a 4 pitch at bat with Isaiah Daily responding with the best hit on a 2 strike double knocking Reed around the bases.

Daily advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch and then scored on an illegal tag for that second run of the inning.

The MF Mustang 3rd baseman tagged Daily without the ball in his glove that allowed the double hitter to waltz in for the 2nd run of the inning.

“I knew I had two strikes,” Daily said. “I told Coach (Hodges) that I would hit a ‘dinger’ and I had envisioned the ball coming and I choked up on the bat and did my job.”

Daily reached base on his next at bat on a Mustang error and was put in motion when Parrish had a seeing eye single between second and third base. On that play Marble Falls helped with their 3rd error of the day scoring Daily.

Ten errors in their last game to 0 miscues in this game with Marble Falls was certainly a good way of improving on that part of the game.

“Defensively, this was the best game we have played this year,” Daily said during the day. “We are there and we just need to compete against the other teams…We have all bettered our team individually.”

Little things will hopefully add up as Canyon Lake can now boast a better played game from their earlier played contest.

The Hawks left 5 runners in scoring position with less than 2 outs as CL could only manufacture 3 hits to go along with those 3 Mustang errors and 5 walks.

“Errors like hitting is contagious,” Coach Dunavant finished. “But we played pretty well today.”

Now Canyon Lake will see if they can put their game together as district play starts up next week.

A tough schedule should be a good way of learning as competition comes down to teams in the Hawks same division.
