Varsity Track Boys and Girls Wim Wimberley Track Meet
Canyon Lake Varsity Boys and Girls both were wimmers last Thursday after traveling across the Devil’s Backbone to Wimberley and the Texan Relays.
The Hawks are poised to have their best Track Season as they embark on District 26-4A next week in Cuero.
CL will travel to Dripping Springs tomorrow to get a final idea of how they will go into the fires and bring home two championships next week.
This meet had Navarro and Wimberley in attendance and winning became more of a moral boost.
Navarro Boy’s have had the best 4×400 meter relay team this year and that last race had the Hawks Flying over the Panthers to take first place while the Girls had a 3 second improvement on their 4×400 meter relay event giving them a second place finish.
That finish for the Ladies in this relay served notice to Navarro as the team of Sophia Thorpe, Bailey Drum, Emma Gray, and Skylar Hurst was less than a second slower.
This Dripping Springs Meet was put together to give these teams some last second work in preparation for next week’s final regular season meet.
Bailey Drum continues to go crazy this year as she totaled 40 points and had her 3rd Meet scoring 40 or more points.
Sophomore Skyler Hurst has raised her bar this year, “Right now I am working on trying to beat my times and getting to Regions.”
“We win track meets as a team,” Hurst said when responding to the individual side of track & field while those points adding up for the team. “This is really exciting running against people that are good and working on improving….this is a self sport and a team sport as a school and we want to be much better.”
Emma Gray and Hurst have also have helped boost this group of ladies.
Those two along with Thorpe and Alysha Perez lowered the all-time 4×200 meter relay time to 1:50.03 within an eyelash of breaking the 1:50 mark which will be on the to do list as this campaign comes to a close.
Hurst had her best triple jump this season as well as running a sparkling 400 meter dash with the best time recorded this track season in district.
Gray has helped with the depth in getting first place points in the high jump and running some strong events in the hurdles and relays.
Another key is seeing how Alysha Perez can perform in those shorter distance races that will help boost CL’s point total.
On the Boy’s side of the ledger, Haden Lee has been nails this year in several events which helps in the depth department. At the Texan Meet, Lee finished with 18 points.
Lee has made his presence known this year in track, “The coaches said if I wanted to get recognized for football in college then running track would help do that.”
“I am putting in hard work in practice,” Lee said as he has scored points in runs, jumps, and throws. “As a whole we are really good in the 4×200 and 4×100 and we want to keep getting better in practice.”
Seven Hawks had double digit points as Brandon Courtney was high point with 23 and Heath McDonough coming in second scoring 19 of the Hawk points.
For Courtney, he broke his own Hawk Records in the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles as he strives to qualify for the State Meet this year.
Lester Boehm is a fixture in all three relays as the Hawks won all of those races scoring 60 points on this night.
“This has been a good season,” Boehm said. “We are definitely getting better and faster…..hopeully we will start to peak when district comes.”
Boehm runs in all of the relays and he commented on passing the baton which is a key to having good results.
“This Meet was good with hand offs,” Boehm said passing The ReSporter a baton.
Another Senior, Robert Woods, has been consistent in the throwing events as he heaved the discus and shot put for 12 points.
Adam Wiewel broke the 5 minute barrier again and will be looking for a better time as he goes for the all time record timed by Mike Russell in the 2013 season.
Wiewel was back in the pack last year during this time of the year and now finds his 1600 meter run times in the hunt each week in scoring points.
On when he figured he had a chance to be better this year, “Cross Country pushed us and after competing in our district meet and I saw the competition and then I knew I could compete,” Wiewel commented.
“That pushed me to an all new level and I want to top my season by shattering the 4:50 mark,” Wiewel said with resolve.
The mile run allows athletes time to think and strategize, “I stay to myself during my runs and start to look at the starting person as the race gets into the final part.”
Going where few other people have ever gone unless you are in a car or bike but running those long runs takes a special athlete and now CL can start getting more athletes in these races.
You can go to the Junior Varsity track article and read about 3 other long distance Hawks that are ready to break those long distance barriers.
Canyon Lake will be in Dripping Springs this Wednesday starting at 5:30 for another chance of getting ready for district next week.
