Hawks End Season on 2 Game Win Streak beat La Vernia, 5-4

Go Hawks!

  Go Hawks!

Canyon Lake Softball got another win over a 1st place team, at La Vernia, on Tuesday, 5-4.

This was the second time in as many games that had a Hawk opponent residing at the top of the heap to find out that this ‘Last’ place club was not really that bad of a team.

That secret formula that had alluded the Hawks was unleashed as the CL scored the first 5 runs in this game to hold on for the win by one run.

This Bear team only had 4 hits going into their half of the 5th inning as Alexis Robinson was given the ball for her last start as a Hawk. This win for Robinson was her 40th in the circle at Canyon Lake finishing just one win away from Missy Romero’s final of 41 right at 4 years ago.

Robinson also controlled her walks while striking out 9 Bears in the contest.

But the game did get scary as momentum was with the Home Team in those last 3 innings.

“It was a little scary because they had momentum,” Head Softball Coach John Gallagher said while biting his fingernails. “I was happy for Alexis being able to finish with two wins and set some records in the process……She will be missed both from the pitching and offensive perspective.”

That is certainly a true, as Robinson raised the bar in every  stat line in using her bat while leading Canyon Lake in strikeouts after passing Romero earlier this season and Robinson will leave the circle at CL with 682 whiffs.

Even with a slump to start district play, Canyon Lake, had their best hitting and on base percentage ever as other players came to the batter’s box with a lethal bat.

Kirsten Jones finished her career and reached base 2 of the 4 times but her averaged dipped since she had a much better average than .500 for this year.

“Kirsten, had a great career improving in every category,” Coach Gallagher heaped praise. “Especially this year with a high batting average and on-base percentage as well as a great base-stealer.”

Not to be lost in the crowd was Senior Tiare Kacir, “Tiare showed off her strong arm and dedication to having a strong senior season,” Coach Gallagher continued. “She played very well in the outfield her last two games and made several key plays.”

Coach Gallagher did have a different line-up for these two wins as that would also help in dialing up (*for the Millennials, dialing up was the way ofd folk would use a phone and sometimes even talk to an ‘operator’) a combination as this season came to a close.

* A confusing part of this article, but you could Google those terms to give you pictures and definitions. Good Luck!

Now back to the Softball Game.

Canyon Lake had all but one Hawk reach base on this night, giving enough pressure to La Vernia ads-300-x-600allowing CL to come out on top.

Finding a way to reduce those errors will certainly be an item coaches will be working on before the start of next year games.

This had La Vernia score 3 runs that were unearned, meaning Canyon Lake would have had 3 outs when those runs scored if those defensive plays would have been outs.

“I was happy for our team that they finished strong the way we did,” Gallager said. “We will need to address the errors and mental mistakes.”

This year’s team is dominated by Sophomores and with more additions from Mountain Valley, the Hawks will look to turn the table next season as CL will go to a smaller district and west instead of east.

“We finished with two quality wins and that was the way we were playing earlier on,” Coach Gallagher closed. “We ended on a high note but know that we should have been in contention.”

Gallagher continued, “We have a lot of talent returning and some new talent coming in which will challenge for starting positions.”
