Go Hawks!
Another year of Hawk Sports has now been entered as The ReSporter finishes the 5th year of covering Canyon Lake.
During the month of May, The Resporter, will go over some of the best games to rekindle so many good happenings.
As this was the last year of having Yoakum, Cuero, La Vernia, and Gonzales in our district and next season, Wimberley and Navarro will also be going to other districts.
Canyon Lake will be the furthest school to the east as Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Bandera will be reunited with the addition of Hondo to round out the 5 team group of schools.
Going from a 7 team to 5 team district will certainly raise the chances for making playoffs a common endeavor.
The football district will have different teams but still just 5 teams like all the other sports.
Crawfish Boil coming this Saturday
Fredericksburg and Boerne will be strong schools and Bandera has posed problems for the Hawks in year’s past.
Hondo will be a new experience as Hawk fans will find out how far a drive it will be as well seeing what this school has in the sports department.
Canyon Lake finished their track season in Kingsville when the 11 students were not able to place in the top 2 for entrance to Austin for the State Meet.
This year’s Track & Field teams were well represented for the first time with several Seniors which helped in finding more traction in competing for district.
On commenting on the Region Meet, Boys Coach Troy Moses commented, “We had some highs and some lows….Heath McDonough had a personal record in the high jump with 6’4” and came real close to getting 6’6”. Over all, I am very happy for the accomplishments that the boys made this year. We broke 5 school records and had 14 top 3 performances.”
When asked about the worth of this year’s seniors, Coach Moses was not hesitant, “I appreciate everything our Seniors did for our track program….We had more Seniors running and throwing this year than we have ever had and by having them run, their senior year, it really helps us develop a true program.”

“Our younger kids are not forced to run at the varsity level, and they are allowed to run and have success,” Coach Moses closed. “I really like where we are and I cannot wait for next year.”
Coach John Barthels was ecstatic thinking back on all the new happenings for this year’s ladies team, “Statistically, this has been the best girls track season in CLHS’s short history…More participants than ever before along with great leadership from our seniors is a direct reflection on the season we had.”
The ReSporter asked Coach Barthels to comment on some of those seniors, “Emma Gray was a great addition to the track team this year….this senior competed in multiple events for us this year and once i had learned she ran the hurdles before, I had her practicing with Coach Greene that afternoon. She qualified for the regional track meet in the high jump, 100 hurdles, and the 4×200 relay. Emma did a great job for us this year, I wish I would have gotten to work with her more than than one year as she had a great year holding school records in the 4×200 and 4×400 relays.”

“Then there is Bailey Drum,” Coach Barthels did not miss a beat. “As a freshman, my first year at CLHS, she was an average height skinny little thing that did not run very fast….she could run some hurdles though and she became stronger and faster over the next three years and one of the best overall athletes that I have ever coached.”
Bailey qualified for the region meet in the triple jump, 100 hurdles, and ran the 4×200 relay,” Coach Barthels caught his breath. “She placed 5th in the triple jump, 6th in the 100 hurdles, and 5th in the 4×200 relays….currently, Bailey, holds school records in the long jump, 4×200 relay, and 4×400 relays.”
That 4×200 relay team took 4 seconds off the Hawk record this season and Coach Barthels commented, “Alysha Perez, Skylar Hurst, Gray, and Drum ran the 4×200 at the regional meet with winds blowing strong and I knew we had a shot at making the finals because we are stronger that a lot of girls out there. We were able to beat our best time of the year by more than a second.”
More good things coming in the coming years in another Hawk sport as Coach Barthels finished with this nugget, “The future is looking bright for the Canyon Lake track and field, we will miss our seniors greatly and they can not be replaced, but the leadership and work ethic they left behind will be what motivates the younger girls to be like them.”
Canyon Lake will be one year older when the next school year begins in August and if you have seen anything from this past year’s of sporting events, a young group of athletes will be ready to start taking more responsibilities and with that more fun in all the different sporting venues.
