Canyon Lake Volleyball swept the Lockhart Lions on Tuesday night by duplicating their 25-19 score for the match. The win was the 5th all time as CL has yet to be beaten by the Lions.

The Hawks were in control for the first two games and then the Lions decided to get their act together with an 8 point rally third game early to go ahead, 13-5.

That 8 point lead continued with Lockhart up 18-10 with momentum to go another game into the set.

CL was not having a good time for that part of the game by committing 3 service errors and another 8 unforced errors during this fog driven game.

“At the end of the third game, I told the girls that they had an opportunity to capitalize and get the job done as I started to make subs until I could find someone who would

get the job done,” Head Coach Kim Paisley commented.

Canyon Lake did have a great opportunity to see if they could get back into a game and to find out how they might respond.

“They fought back and maintained their intensity,” Coach Paisley calculated. “I wanted them not to lose when down and stay mentally focused.”

Fight back is a good way of saying the Hawks scored 15 of the next 16 points for a 6 point win.

The Hawks had not been down once in those first two games and with both teams being able to claim a one point lead through the first 10 points as a high, it became a different Lockhart for the middle part of the game.

With the score knotted up at 5 points a piece, the Lions then had an 8 point rally which finished after a kill by Faith Hasness.

Lockhart continued to keep their lopsided lead for 4 more service points as each rotation had the Lions one step closer to sending this match to another game.

That was when Senior Regan Mickey started her serve and the Hawk comeback.

“Coach started rotating us till someone was going to get it,” Mickey said in response to starting the third game behind the 8-Ball. “This game helped our mental game because we did not want to go four games.”

On what changed the momentum back into the Hawk’s favor, Mickey said succinctly, “When we put Faith back in then we started to kill it every time.”

Twelve of those points were off an offensive kill as Canyon Lake finished by looking like last year’s team.

Hasness led the charge with 5 of those 11 kills and Anna Bettersworth and Felicity Niestemski both had 2 kills for the rally breaker.

Another good part of that rally was seeing how Lockhart could not get a point based on how well the Hawk defense was keeping the balls from hitting the floor.

Libero Sam York was trying to match the Libero on the Lion’s team as that player was all over the court.

“I was seeing how well she (Lion’s Libero) was doing and I was just trying to match her,” York said with admiration. “Our intensity was low in that last game and it was encouraging to get it back….Regan was serving and we just started feeding off of her serves.”

That was well said as Canyon Lake now runs their record to 6-3 as they will next take the court in San Antonio this Friday in the NEISD Tournament in Churchill High School.
