Pre-Game Canyon Lake @ Blanco
Canyon Lake @ Blanco Friday August 26 7:30pm Hawks 0-0 Panthers 0-0 Series Record: Blanco leads series 5-3. 2008 Hawks 00 Blanco 63 2009 Hawks 21 Blanco 14 2010 Hawks 07 Blanco 12 2011 Hawks 14 Blanco 07 2012 Hawks 26 Blanco 21 2013 Hawks 06 Blanco 13 2014 Hawks 07 Blanco 35 2015 Hawks 00 Blanco 14 Scores for this Year (First game for both schools) =================================================================
Canyon Lake does not have a lot of boasting opportunities with their 3A Panther friends as the all time series finds CL
with a 3-5 record going into their 9th year of opening their football season.
In fact, the Hawks have been outscored 49-7 the past two years giving you an idea of how hard Blanco has been in solving for Canyon Lake.
Go back three years and the score would be, 62-13 giving a casual observer an idea of how good Blanco has been compared to your home town team.
As we start to open the numbers, Canyon Lake will find they have been beaten by a team that has a better running game than a team that uses the run as their specialty.
Case in point, during this 3 game losing streak, the Hawks have thrown 7 more passes than the Panthers while continuing to have less total yardage during this slide.
game total yards Blanco CL Hawks final score 265 215 13-06 Panthers 325 158 35-07 Panthers 261 147 14-00 Panthers
Bottom line is in having no way of taking Blanco lightly as Canyon Lake has to figure out how to start their season on better footing than previous years.
Even during that 8-2 campaign during the 2011 season, the Hawks, had to come from behind to eke out a win over the Panthers, 14-7.
That was the year CL used a lethal running attack headed by Zach Henshaw who broke the 2,000 yard barrier during that season.
One more item to take notice: The Hawks, in eight games with the Panthers have just one touchdown in the first quarter and that was with just three minutes in that first stanza. That game Canyon Lake scored their most points with 27 in the contest.
Averaging just over 10 points a game is not a good way of securing a win, especially with Blanco returning most of last year starters on that side of the ball.
Canyon Lake will have a lot of youth sprinkled in with a good group of Seniors to start this year as both the Junior Varsity and Freshman squads won their district races and will hope to bring those same attributes and attitudes to the varsity this go around.
QB Ben Fulton and Brandon Courtney will be starting their second year behind center while only losing Robert Woods in the backfield to graduation.
The Hawks are loaded with running backs as their stockpile keeps getting larger with another good group of backs
Junior Tanner Faris along with returning Micah St. John, Austin Brennan, and Jacob Ruff who all saw significant playing time as Freshman and Sophomores on varsity last season.
Canyon Lake will have linebacker Kenneth Jowers who finished with 98 tackles last season helping lead the defense.
One last note will come from special teams with a Hawk team looking for the next Thorpe to take those kicking duties and help calm that part of this year’s club.
Go Hawks!!
