Lady Hawks Fly Higher than Eagles in Win over Johnson City, 45-23
Canyon Lake evened their record to 1-1 after a win on Friday night against Johnson City, 45-23.
The Hawks have yet to field their full line-up as Reagan Heun was held out for precautionary reasons in this match-up.
On the flip side, CL did have the return of Alexa Ramos, Sarah Russell, and Emily McDonald which made up for Heun’s absence in this win.
Those three players combined for 28 points which would have been enough points for this victory.
“For the most part they ran man and we were able to get into the kill zone,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “It’s still very early in the installation phase, so we should continue to improve our offensive flow.”
That is certainly good news as CL was able to score 45 points or more on 6 occasions out of 28 games last season.
The Hawks defense had a solid effort giving the home team a complete game for this early set of games.
“We gave up 7 total field goals and the rest were free throws,” Coach Burleson continued. “The big reason was not giving up much on fast breaks….It’s not always going to work like that but we were able to limit turnovers which led to points in transition back on defense.”
Senior Sarah Russell led the Hawks in scoring 15 points, while the two freshmen Jessie Melendez and Chelsea Tschoepe combined for 14 points as this team continues to work hard in these early pre/district contests.
“Sarah (Russell) had a good night because she was aggressive going to the rim and looking to attack,” Coach Burleson remarked. “She got more comfortable in the second half with the pick and roll….she got some rub cuts that were a result of good looks by our other guards.”
Having the Junior Alexa Ramos helping with guard duties also allowed this game to go into the win column.
Canyon Lake will have a good measuring stick this coming Tuesday when they take a ride on the Backbone to Wimberley to see just how far they have improved with this hard to beat school.
“There will be some hurdles to overcome at times,” Coach Burleson closed. “It’s just a matter of repetition and experience….We have options in our offense that we haven’t gotten comfortable yet so we are still working on that.”
A short drive for a chance to see this year’s Lady Hawks as the JV team will prelude the varsity this Tuesday.
Go Hawks!!
