Lady Hawks Straighten the Back-Bone in Win over Texans, 51-49

Wimberley lost their grip in loss to Canyon Lake as the Hawks won for the first time since February 9, 2010. This win was the first victory on the Texan’s home turf, 51-49.
That was the year your Hawks qualified for the playoffs in their second year of competition. That win was needed to get their ticket punched for those fun games.
“I am really pleased with our effort as Wimberley forced us out of our comfort zone,” Head Coach Zach Burleson surmised. “We had so many opportunities in that 4th Quarter to knock them down and increase our lead but this game showed we took a step in the right direction.”
That direction is becoming a straighter Backbone for this edition of Canyon Lake Lady Hawks.

This game not only had the notable but the backbone of any team is those players that wear many hats during a contest.
“You could just see the energy come up when (Emily) McDonald came on the court in the second quarter,” Coach Burleson said intently.
“We really wanted to win,”McDonald said. “We have potential and to be good I wanted to push and do better.”
McDonald entered the game when Canyon Lake had hit a brick wall and needed that energy to get the team and game going back in their direction.
Canyon Lake started this contest fast scoring the first 4 points in a 34 second span, to serve notice this would not be the same Hawk team that has adorned the Texan’s gym in years past.
The Devil’s Backbone continues to be a much straighter road with each year in girls sports as Basketball has now joined their Volleyball cohorts with both Hawk teams celebrating a win at the Texan’s gym this school year.
In this game, Junior Reagan Heun led CL in scoring 17 points with Alexa Ramos celebrating her birthday hitting double figures with 11 points.

These two players also combined for 9 steals for this contest which was a big reason for helping in this win.
“We came out in the second quarter and we knew we could win this game,” Ramos stole the show. “We don’t get to play them (Wimberley) in district this year so we wanted this game….we started jelling a lot and we started clicking.”
Wimberley and Canyon Lake will not be in the same district for the first time since the Hawks started competing and with both communities being a measly 14 miles apart that tidbit did not dampen the intensity on this night.
“You could see that this game was being treated like a district game with something on the line,” Coach Burleson said.
Canyon Lake won their first game in Wimberley and stopping a 10 game losing streak to the Texans.

There were 6 ties on this night and the contest increased in intensity as each minute passed thru the 4th quarter.
Wimberley took control of the game late in the first quarter with their first lead with lay-up with as the horn sounded to end that first period.
The Texans outscored CL, 10-2 in that time frame as they bolted out to a, 23-17 advantage with 5:24 left before halftime.
Ramos, Heun, and Jessie Melendez each would score baskets helping the Hawks claw back within a one score game. A Texan 3 pointer and free throw see/sawed the lead back to 6 point Wimberley lead with 3:16 to go before halftime.
“I have wanted this game since my freshman year,” Heun sank another free throw. “I had a feeling this would be our year because we have so much more experience and we are playing together and the hostile environment did not hurt us as we just kept on working and hitting all the right spots.”
CL would score 10 of the next 14 points to take a one point lead into the 3rd quarter, 31-30. That comeback was fueled by Heun’s 8 points to finish out the run.
In the 3rd quarter the Hawks increased their 1 point advantage to another point when Canyon Lake would lead, 43-41 going into that final stanza.
With a Heun bucket at the 7:10 marker that froze the score with a Hawk, 45-44 lead. as this game became a defensive battle.
There would be 4 minutes with a lid on each school’s rim before another Heun bucket that gave the Hawk’s a 3 point advantage, 47-44 at the 3:10 mark.

Heun had another basket with 2:40 on the clock helping the CL cause increasing the lead, 49-45.
After another Texan free throw the score was back to 3 points at, 49-46 Hawks with 2:08 left in regulation. Then a Heun assist to Ramos for a reverse lay-up helped the CL lead increase up to 5 points, 51-46.
Wimberley would have another free throw, 51-47 with 0:14 left in regulation with the Texan’s fouling for a chance to close the gap. That strategy was successful as the Hawk’s would not sink their charity stripe chance and the Texans’ then scurried down the floor for their final shot with no time left.
The victory was now all Hawks, 51-49 and Canyon Lake can now claim that the Back-Bone is becoming a straight shot to Wimberley with their first win at the Texan’s den.
Good times for the Canyon Lake (2-1) for this season as they will now go to San Antonio for a very tough district opponent in El Paso Burges that is ranked in the Top Ten for 6A schools.
