Canyon Lake Girl’s Basketball went into the tall trees this past week as they participated in the San Antonio ISD Basketball Tournament.

Those tall trees came in the form of 5A and 6A schools and the Hawks had a 1-3 showing for this 3 day event.

The SAISD tourney started with a top 5 ranked El Paso Burges team that beat CL, 61-37 on Thursday.

Head Coach Zach Burleson was optimistic after the 4 game experience, “If we play like we are capable, then we can play with anybody.”

The games showed some inconsistencies, but in playing larger classification schools you will certainly be helped as this season progresses.

In response to those inconsistencies and turnovers, Coach Burleson remarked, “We had issues with that, but it is mostly a matter of moving towards the ball….a lot of times turnovers are attributed to the girl with the ball, but in reality it is on the girls without the ball. We will continue to work on that.”

There can always be some good things that can come out of contests with repetition and in playing larger schools, those mistakes can have a magnifying glass put on what needs to be worked on.

“We played well versus El Paso Burges as they are ranked number 5 in 5A,” Coach Burleson said. “It was our best effort and we need to continue that type of effort versus everybody. If we do that, then we win the next two games.”

Coach Burleson continued, “El Paso Burges helped show that we can be real good and we just need to be focused and ready to go.”

This 4 game stint had Junior Reagan Heun with 56 points with Alexa Ramos scoring 29, followed by Sarah Russell with 21.

The two freshman continue to get valuable floor time as Chelsea Tschoepe and Jessie Melendez combined in scoring 36 points and 36 rebounds.

Another important stat for these two freshman was having just 14 turnovers combined for those games which averages to right at 3 per game.

The team averaged 24 turnovers per game which is a part of their game that will need to be reduced as each turnover is a lost chance for scoring points.

The ReSporter has been covering Lady Hawk’s Basketball long enough that having a 61% mark from the charity stripe is vastly improved from previous years and hopefully that part of their game can continue to improve.

Canyon Lake will be on the road for their next two games as CL will be off to Somerset on November 21st and then travel to Lampasas eight days later as they prepare for the Hawk Tournament the first part of December.
