Hawks Get Sneaky Win Over Lampasas, 49-38

Mia Riali has little things adding up to BIG things

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks got that bad taste out of their mouths after last week’s Burnet Tournament in beating Lampasas Badgers, 49-38.

“We needed the win,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “The Christmas break came at the worst time as we were getting to a good point, and now we are restarting again and it will be good to get back to a routine.”

Reagan Heun and Alexa Ramos finished with 17 and 12 points respectfully as Heun got her double-double with 11 rebounds.

This contest was separated by 3 points or less through the first quarter and 5 minutes in the second stanza before a Heun 3 pointer helped increase that lead to 6 points, 18-12.

With a 21-15 halftime lead, the Hawks, would unleash their best 3 point output of the year in the 3rd quarter as CL made 4 for 6 from beyond the arc in that 19 point barrage to increase their lead to 15 points.

Canyon Lake would ride out this win shooting 5 free throws that kept the game out of harms way and an eventual 11 point victory.

         Hit Man says Go Hawks!

Those little things continue to shine as Mia Riali started with a much more active game coming out of those 4 games in Burnet last week and finished with 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 1 block for good measure.

“It was hard at first as I have played guard the last 13 years and now I am playing post,” Riali spoke of how she has been asked to play different positions for the team. “I am getting the hang of it and it is fun….I am not tall and I have to change it up a little.”

Riali is now a sneaky defensive player as she has a knack to get those rebounds while playing the larger girls in the paint.

Chelsea Tschoepe was smooth from the outside scoring a couple of 3 pointers as well with Senior Sarah Russell getting out of her mini-slump hitting both of her 3 point tries and finishing with 8 points against the Badgers.

“Keep shooting and don’t let those missed shots get to you,” Russell said on how she was wanting to get out of this, after Christmas Break slump. “Hopefully we can focus on defense and limit our turnovers.”

Those two aspects of basketball are critical since defense is that one constant that just needs dedication and hustle to be successful.

Canyon Lake’s 12th win, has these ladies ready to climb some higher totals that previous Hawk clubs have had three seasons that stand above this present win mark.

                 Total Wins Year

                     19 2010

                     13 2012

                     11 2011

Shooting 50% from the 3 point line was the best this year and being below 20 turnovers will always be a recipe for getting a win on most nights.

Ramos continues to climb the all-time steals record after snatching 5 in this game as she leads the Hawks with 59 and averaging 3.3 steals per contest this year.

Canyon Lake will take Friday off as they prepare for Boerne next Tuesday at the Hawk Nest to start District 28-4A play.

This District is loaded as 3 of the 5 teams are ranked in the top 25 according to the TABC-Coaches Poll.

                School Record Ranking
                Boerne 13-2 14th
                Fredericksburg 18-4 19th
                Hondo 16-5 23th

Canyon Lake did have a rough time in Burnet last week and having several key players absent for all of those contests allowed more playing time for a deep Freshman class as Coach Burleson brought up 3 Freshman combined with Tschoepe and Melendez as mainstays.

This is a huge development as this year continues as a building time, but there are 2 Seniors that do not want to be building at the end without spending some time in that structure.

Go Hawks and Keep Building for a great finish!!
