Canyon Lake has had a 3rd quarter just like the one the Hawks administered to Hondo on Friday after beating the Owls, 56-41 for their first district win.

On Tuesday of this week, Canyon Lake came out of their halftime locker room down just two points against Wimberley, 25-23 and then proceeded to hand over the keys to their car to the Texans after suffering a 17 point downfall and eventual loss during that 3rd quarter game.

This time, Canyon Lake found that they could administer that same type of pain to Hondo by outscoring the Owls 18 points and turning a 3 point deficit to a 15 point advantage to open the second half.

“It is always great to start off district with a win,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I thought we played a really great game and did some really good things….Our defensive effort and activity was great the entire game.”

The Hawks are 9-2 when holding their opponent under 50 points this year which speaks well for how a good defense can lead to a win on many nights.

CL had no problem in getting their shots off in those first two quarters but making them was a whole different matter after scoring 16 second half points.

“The first half of the game was a little sluggish and we just could not get the ball in the basket,” Coach Chapman recounted. “We weren’t playing bad, we just couldn’t make shots…we picked up the defensive pressure the second half, which allowed us to force some turnovers and get some easy layups. That really got us going and broke the game open.”

Canyon Lake was led by Rory Preiss’ 20 points after spending much of his time on the bench after suffering foul trouble in the opening minutes to start this contest. Preiss is averaging 13 points per game and took his game to another level as the Hawks used their height to double up the Owls in rebounding.

To take that statement to the offensive side of the rim, Canyon Lake needed just 2 more offensive rebounds to match the number of total rebounds by Hondo, 25-23.

That tidbit translated into 19 Hawk points compared to the Owls scoring 3 second chance points.

Game-set-match as controlling the boards was the difference for CL in this victory.

Heath McDonough and Tyler Williams both had monster games under the basket with 14 and 13  rebounds respectfully, that had Williams corralling 8 offensive rebounds spelling Hondo into a Honda!

Honda had 8 offensive rebounds as a team.

“Heath (McDonough) and Tyler (Williams) did a great job inside as always and dominated the paint and boards,” Coach Chapman closed. “Gerrit (Wilkins) and Parker (Mott) pushed the ball for us, which led to easy baskets in transition, and Rory (Preiss) and our wings played great defense and got down the floor.”

Heath McDonough scored 11 points for a double-double and continues to play at a high level for Canyon Lake this season.

Canyon Lake has averaged in the top 3 for several team statistical categories this year in comparison to past Hawk clubs.

The Hawks are a sparkling, 9-0 if they reach 56 points offensively this year which can give CL fans a number to shoot for in willing a win whether you are in Hondo or in a Honda.

Canyon Lake will be on the road this Tuesday when they travel to Fredericksburg and attempt a chance to start their district season with 2 wins which has never happened in the Hawks short history.
