Swim Team Dives into District Meet this Saturday
Canyon Lake will go to the Pool this Saturday for their last Team Meet as many Hawk swimmers look to move on in qualifying for Regionals.
The ReSporter: What does the Swim Team have in returning swimmers and how will that help finish this season?
Coach Kim Moses: “The CLHS Swim Team is returning 14 swimmers from last year’s team – we have grown considerably this year and have doubled our numbers (28 total swimmers). We have a very strong freshmen group that have helped to fill spots in individual events as well as relays. We’ve also had a number of former swimmers decide to compete at the HS level and some “newbies” to the sport that have done an awesome job! We have incorporated daily/weekly weight training, strength and conditioning, and even some stretching and yoga – it’s amazing how these minor changes have added up to major results.”
The ReSporter: How well has this group performed up to this time period?
Coach Moses: “We have had a very successful swim season –Canyon High School (NB) – practice meet
*Canyon High School (NB) – Team finished 3rd (behind New Braunfels High & Canyon High)
*Burnet Small Team Invitational (Burnet) – We Won the Meet (Swept all divisions – Team, Boys, & Girls)
*Skip Wilkerson Invitation (San Marcos) – Team finished 4th (Behind Dripping Springs, San Marcos, & Wimberley)
*South Zone TISCA – Josh Davis Natatorium (San Antonio) – This is an invitational meet. Alex Borremans was our only qualifying swimmer – he made the finals in the 100 Free by beating out a Boerne swimmer in a swim-off.
*4A & Under State Championship (Burnet) – Team placed 1st (beating Wimberley by 1 point)
*TEX Robertson Invitational (Burnet) – Team finished 3rd (behind San Marcos & McCallum)
Our most important meet is this Friday (District) – we are in a completely different, extremely competitive district. The top 6 in each event will qualify for Regionals which is held in Rosenberg next weekend.”
The ReSporter: What would be a good measuring stick to see how well these swimmers have performed up to now?
Coach Moses: “For the most part, we have consistently swam faster at each meet – especially our newer swimmers. Our veteran swimmers are already competing at such a high level that I didn’t expect as much progress, but they have pleasantly proven me wrong.”
The ReSporter: What are your hopes as the team prepares for the January Swim Meets?
Coach Moses: “Even though our District is one of the toughest in the state, I expect us to have a good number of Regional Qualifiers and gain some great experience for our younger kids.
The ReSporter: Give us a couple of Boys and Girls that are pillars and what their times and awards they have acquired going into the Winter Break.
Coach Moses: “Alex Borremans (Senior Captain) – He transferred to CLHS last year and has been a HUGE asset to the team – he holds a number of school records and understands how to practice, train, and compete. More importantly, he encourages and helps to train other swimmers. He finished 4th at Regionals last year (2 places away from qualifying for State). We expect great things from him.
Hannah Schneider (Senior Captain) – She is a soft-spoken leader, but gets the job done. She has been on the team for 4 years and has seen her fair share of successes in the pool.
Our other Seniors include Ashlenn Trejo, Sydney Young, Brandon Courtney, Colton McDonald, and Josh White – the Senior leadership on this team is outstanding and will be greatly missed.
Dante Ortega (Junior Captain)
Kaili Carrol (Junior Captain)”
The ReSporter: Do you feel this team will continue the dominance of past years in the meet that has all similar size schools compete in Burnet together?
Coach Moses: “We are beyond excited about the future of CLHS Hawk Swimming – we have an extremely strong group of underclassmen who are already competing at a high level. We expect to continue our dominance amongst like-sized teams. We strongly encourage swimming year-round and look forward to our Summer Swim Program (Aqua Hawks) – those swimmers are our future – and the future is bright.”
The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and good luck in San Antonio this Saturday and we look forward to hearing those results. Go Hawks!!
