CL Hawks Fall Off Truck in Loss to the Billies, 64-49

Canyon Lake fell off the truck in the 3rd quarter in their loss to Fredericksburg on Friday night at the Hawk Nest, 64-49.

The Hawks carved out a 27-25 advantage going into the halftime locker room after Sophomore Parker Mott had a steal underneath CL’s basket on an inbound pass and scoring at the horn for the lead.

That was the type of plays needed and for those first two quarters the Hawks had held their own in a battle with the top two teams in District 28-4A.

There was even a spark and tenacity starting the second half as the Billies started this part of the game with a 3 pointer to claim the lead, 28-27. Canyon Lake responded with a sweet pivot play in the paint from Gerrit Wilkins to put the Hawks back up by one but a Fredericksburg answer had the Billies up by 3 points again, 32-29 with just 2 minutes gone in the 3rd quarter.

A 7 point Hawk run was forthcoming when Tyler Williams had a 3 point play the old fashion way via a free throw, next a smooth pass and drive by Rory Preiss followed with a Heath McDonough 2 pointer after his battle for an offensive board and put back.

McDonough’s play also drew a foul but that point was missed which would have given you an idea on how one of the Hawks achilles heals became more evident as this contest continued.

Missed free throws. From this point the Billies would take the game in hand with a 17 to 2 point run that had some missed free throws on the front end of one-and-one tries for the Hawks and just missed shots combined.

Fredericksburg would literally drain the swamp with a deliberate offense that took minutes off the clock before a shot was attempted and many of those times during a Billies possession the shot was good.

Good news? CL is almost there with their best ball handling team after committing just 5 turnovers on offense as a Billies press did not dictate this final score.

A poor night of shooting blanks finally buckled the Hawks out of their ride and 15 point loss.

Canyon Lake will be in Bandera this next Tuesday as their game plan will be finishing the regular season with a 2 game winning streak and a second seed in hand.
