Hawk Swim Team Makes Waves at Region Meet
Hawk Swimmers made waves on Canyon Lake after best finish in Canyon Lake history with 8th Place competing against 23 schools in Region IV.
Alex Borremans had a 3rd place finish in the 100 Free Style race with another Hawk Record of 48.66 time.
“Our motto this weekend was “have fun – swim, don’t think,” Head Coach Kim Moses said. “At this level, swimming is all mental – there’s no more preparing physically – I think the kids did a great job of having fun which led to personal bests.”
Borremans certainly was on during his time in the water as he had a 5th place finish in his 50 Free Style event.
“He (Borremans) is used to competing at an extremely high level,” Coach Moses continued. “Alex and can sometimes over think his swims or worry too much about the other swimmers – he finished with 4 school records and the possibility of being called up to compete at state – it doesn’t get much better than that!”
This could be the light that goes off in an athletes head that says, ‘hey I can do this!’
“I think the swimmers are starting to realize the amount of time, effort, and dedication it takes to be a successful swimmer in a successful swim program.”
This sounds familiar for many Hawk teams as they have matured and found that just competing during the school year might not be enough to get noticed.
“We are a high school team that only swims during the high school season and trying to compete against swimmers who swim multiple times a day, hours a day all-year,” Coach Moses swam across the Red Sea. “Considering we are not in the pool nearly as much as they are, we have done a fantastic job, but we want to get to the next level….we are encouraging our swimmers to swim more.”
Coach Moses went on to mention that they plan to open the pool in March and April for swimming practices for those who want to continue to compete and those that might be interested in competing.
Canyon Lake might have been walking on water on their way back home after the Region Meet and now running across the water being that next step.
“We will hold mandatory 2-a-days in August before school starts,” Moses continued swimming. “If we want to swim with the big fish, we need to train like the big fish.”
Wow, I don’t know many people who would not jump at a chance to swim during August before school starts.
Congrats Hawks!!
