CL’s JV and Freshman games with Sealy
The Canyon Lake Junior Varsity won Thursday night 32-8 in Sealy Stadium.
The Hawks jumped out into the lead scoring 20 points in the first quarter.
“We scored on the first play of the game on a 60 yard pass from Conner Ricker to Isaiah Gutierrez,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “The defense gave us the ball back, and after driving the ball down the field on the ground, we scored again on a 10 yard pass from Ricker to Andrew Riali.”
Austin Denton was good on the point after attempts and barely had time to rest as Gutierrez took the Sealy Tiger punt back 55 yards for another touchdown.
The second quarter slowed down for the Hawks and the Tigers held serve and kept CL out of the endzone.
This would also be the quarter Sealy would strike scoring their only touchdown. We were held scoreless during this time, and Sealy managed to push a td across. The quarter got a little sloppy as the Tigers pinned the Hawks on their three yard line.
Then responded with a sack giving Sealy their final points for the game.
“The players came out extremely focused in the second half,” Coach Dunavant said. “After the kickoff the defense went to work and Sealy did not get anywhere near the endzone the rest of the night.”
This CL team is starting to get the snowball down the hill concept that came about last season. For the title called Canyon Lake Junior Varsity, this win gives them a 13 game winning streak.
Coach Dunavant let it be known how the players did, “Daniel Reed did a great job on the defensive line, and Isaac and Javier Mendez played very well at cornerback for the defense.”
The Hawks got another punt return from Gutierrez, this time from 65 yards. The game was essentially over by now as the defense held the Tigers to just three first downs in the second half.
After the defense forced another three and out, the offense went to work moving the ball. The Hawks started the drive 75 yards from the goal line.
That is when Dominic Theisz scoring off right tackle from three yards out to put the final nail in the Tiger coffin.
The rest of the game the defense continued to dominate Sealy’s offense, and the Hawk offense drove the ball up and down the field.
Canyon Lake turned the ball over twice inside the Sealy 10 yard line in the fourth quarter. The greatest result about those fumbles was it worked better than a punt.
The Hawks continued to have time consuming drives to put the Tigers in their cage.

“The kids played extremely hard last night,” Coach Dunavant finished. “We are really proud of how the junior varsity kids came out focused and were ready to play after a three hour bus ride and a change in their normal game day routine. The kids worked hard all week, and their preparation paid dividends for them last night.”

CANYON LAKE FRESHMAN
“The freshman lost an extremely hard fought game last night. Canyon Lake lost 28-25.
The Hawks were trading punches with a very good football team all night.
With 4:30 left in game, Canyon Lake pulled to within three being down 28-25. After that score, our defense went three and out giving the ball back to our offense with 2:35 left on the clock.
The Hawks got a drive going but couldn’t finish, turning it over on downs with 30 seconds left on the clock.
The good things: The freshman have continued to get better week to week. We have fixed the penalties and turnovers and begun to execute better as a team. We are starting to see sparks of the intensity required to win that usually stems from confidence and knowing what to do.
This next week should look, sound, and feel pretty good if we keep progressing the way we are.
Stand out players on offense were Ian May – RT, John McGuire – C, Hayden Dubois – RB, and Shane Relkin – WR. Defensive stand outs were Tommy Clark – SS, Josh DeVries – RC, Austin Acosta – LB, and Zach Moss – DE.
