Canyon Lake Lady Soccer team beat Bandera, 6-0 last Friday on the road and will have one more game with Fredericksburg before they continue into the, ‘win or go home’, time of year.

The Hawks achieved their 10th win and 3rd win in District 27-4A action.

CL had multiple game participants on this night with the Bulldogs.

Hannah Young scored 2 goals followed by Meredith Ellery who had 1 goal and 2 assists.

Chloe Cullen pitched in with 2 assists with one goal scored by Kalani Thorpe, Katie Rios, and Ashlynn Vazquez.

Goalkeeper, Jenna Pritzkau had a busy and productive evening while stopping 12 shots on goal to preserve a shut-out and catapult the Hawks to that last game with Fredericksburg next week.

CL will try to sweep the Billies with a repeat win 4 games ago as that was a high water mark for this season and that game etched into one of their most important wins in their short history.

Another win would give the Hawks a 3rd seed and drop the Billies to the final district slot.

The season is now entering a time where rest might be more important than going all out.

“At this point in the season, after playing 20 games, the team knows their roles, understands the tactics and are meshing well,” Head Coach Ryan Tierney said. “We really got to work on our offense Friday against the Bulldogs and we want that to show up going forward.”

Scoring 6 goals and having a shut-out certainly was welcomed as scoring goals has been hard to come by as this season has matured. A game that played out against Bandera was good to see as a win was expected.

“I gave the girls some extra rest this past week and they’ll get some (rest) going forward through spring break,” Coach Tierney said strategically. “We have to come back refreshed and revitalized from break and take on a Fredericksburg team looking to settle the score.”

Canyon Lake will have a bye for their first game and then will face a school that will already have a playoff win going into that second round.

“Playoffs are a new season and tricky,” Coach Tierney surmised. “We will have a long break after district ends so maintaining a high level of play will be important….we will have a warm-up game against La Vernia on March 21st to get some practice in against a different opponent.”

That seems to be a good way to have a pseudo playoff game before the real deal comes calling.

Coach Tierney shared some thoughts on a couple of players. “Going forward, Junior Midfielder, Meredith Ellery has really come on strong for us both defensively and offensively….she dominates the midfield by gaining possessions of the ball and then making great decisions going forward on the pitch offensively.”

“An underclassmen, Sophomore Goalkeeper, Jenna Pritzkau has solidified our defense throughout the season and in district play,” Tierney continued. “She literally has made game saving saves when needed and continues to be a consistent defender of the goal in the back….going forward she is vital to our success.”

This has been a good year for Canyon Lake and leaving the regular season with a 2 game winning streak would be a good way to have a shot of momentum getting ready for the playoff contest.

“I enjoy coaching this team,” Coach Tierney said with pride. “Their style of play is exciting to watch and I hope these girls get to play good enough soccer to play deep into the playoffs.”

That will be the goal for this Hawk team and the Hawk Nation will now have two years running where the boys and girls teams have achieved a playoff spot and a chance to continue.
