Canyon Lake showed signs of life after blanking Jourdanton in their last tournament game in Somerset, 3-0.

“We played two games real well,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant surmised. “In our loss to Somerset our pitching did not have a walk and everything they (Somerset) got they earned.”

CL had a stellar performance from the mound in the second game that has given that glimmer of hope that this season has a chance of pulling out better than their record indicates.

“Our team is not set up for having success in a tournament format,” Coach Dunavant said. “You play a lot of games in a few days and we do not have the depth on defense or on the mound….if we bring in a player in the field to pitch then we just had one of our best fielders switched and having a different player in that vacated spot will cause mistakes because of not being used to that position.”

Canyon Lake has shown they can put a decent product on the field when the players can be used in their regular positions such as the Jourdanton contest.

Gordon the Plumber says way to   Go Hawks!!

“We had our set defense for (Gavin) Dietrich,” Coach Dunavant continued.

Dietrich’s performance was maximized by having one of CL’s rotation players pitching and the defense set like a district contest would be played.

Finding ways to score was the key in this contest as the Hawks made those 3 hits count in scoring those 3 runs.

Gavin Dietrich pitched his best game of the year with a 3 hitter and 6 strikeouts. Throwing 99 pitches was a good sign and having what could be a reliable Cale Claycomb coming in for his one scoreless inning for the save.

CL had a good top of the 2nd inning when Jourdanton could not score after their runner was cut down at home after a fielders choice when Caleb Williams fielded the grounder and the throw home.

The Hawks started their half of the 2nd inning when CJ Parrish led off and was hit by the pitch. Hayden Reed was inserted after a successful sac bunt from Avery Montgomery that advanced Parrish to 2nd base.

Reed promptly stole 3rd on the first pitch to JT Greene, then Cade Dunavant got a free pass putting runners at the corners. with 2 outs.

A wild pitch plated Reed after a strikeout that ended the inning.

Canyon Lake went to work in the next inning when Dylan Compton started with a walk and after a Williams foul out, William Gore singled to put the runners on the corner with one out.

Dietrich had a fly out to centerfield that brought Compton in for a, 2-0 lead as Dietrich was getting in a groove on the mound.

Jourdanton was able to get two baserunners in the top of the 5th after an error and walk. Both runners were stranded on first and second base after a Dietrich strikeout ending the threat.

Dietrich had his best inning in the 6th with 2 strikeouts and a pop out to Compton to end the stanza.

The Hawks would add an insurance run in the bottom half had Dietrich helping his own cause with a lead-off single.

Reed was inserted once again as a courtesy runner. This time two steals on two consecutive pitches had Reed standing on 3rd base and a Parrish single would bring Reed home for the Hawks final run.

                 Go CL Hawks!

Cale Claycomb entered the game after Dietrich put some drama into the game after giving up a lead off single to Jourdanton in the final inning.

The lefty Claycomb picked-off the Jourdanton base runner and then coaxed a pop up to Dunavant on 2nd base for the second out.

A four pitch walk to the next batter instilled some drama but a 3 pitch out  that was a grounder to 3rd baseman Greene put this game in the win column for Canyon Lake’s 2nd win this season.

This was a good comeback for Claycomb after a shaky outing in the Medina Valley game earlier in the tournament.

Go Hawks!!
