Hawks Beat Bandera, 12-0 after No-Hit Effort by Mentzer

Lauren Mentzer pitches a No! No! against Bandera while striking out 14 Dogs!

Canyon Lake goes out in style for their last regular season game with a no-hitter, 14 strikeout, grand slam victory over the Bandera Bulldogs, 12-0.

“They knew what they needed to do,” Head Coach John Gallagher commented after being drenched by the team in recognition of his 100th Hawk win. “We stayed focused all week and went to work right away.”

Pitcher Lauren Mentzer has been needing a game like this through this district season as she walked her first batter and then proceeded to strikeout the next 14 batters for the victory.

In fact, Mentzer had one ball that made the playing field and that was the last Bulldog at the plate and the ground ball went to Mentzer for the throw to first that finished the game.

“I know what I needed to do and I just made sure I focused and pitched to get a strike.” ‘Osterman’ Mentzer said in having 14 strikeouts. “This will mean we will start off good and continue in what we need to do in lengthening our season.”

All the outs but one had a Mentzer autograph on the ball which resulted in no fielding errors as the Hawks could have had anyone for defense and making a fielding play would not have been needed.

That other out was Catcher Kat Weber throwing out a Bulldog at 2nd base on an attempted steal.

Weber and Mentzer had both been on a mini slump the past few games and both players produced from the plate on this night.

Weber with 2 doubles and Mentzer with the other Hawk double to the wall.

“I needed it (batting) for the season, not for me personally, but for the team,” Mentzer closed.

“I went and visited some schools in Dallas on Wednesday and that opened my eyes on where I need to be,” Weber started on how her game in the batter’s box was needed. “I went home and worked on my hitting and overall I was needing to be focused and start working harder in practice and that will help in the playoffs.”

It was Senior night and all 4 Hawks played the whole game as they would go out in style.

                   Go Hawks!!

Cassidy Martin and Haley Lucero enjoyed their chance to be rewarded for the hard work put in through their years at the Hawk Nest.

CL did not take long to tip the scales in their favor as Carley Dubois and Marley Carrizales both reached base safely in that first inning and a one out single by Maddy Puente scored both players as this was a taste of things to come.

Puente is making a pretty solid mark this season as she has reached base safely for the last 13 games and now has a 11 game hitting streak with most of those games being multi-hits contests.

Puente would come to bat in the 3rd inning with the bases loaded and on the second pitch sent the ball to the Canyon Lake High School ‘Lake’. It was Puente’s second grand-slam of the season and her 4th home-run this year.

“I knew it was gone,” Puente said matter of factly. “I could feel the ball off the bat and I wanted it so bad….now we are hitting the gaps and it shows we have got to hit and work harder.”

Puente was commenting on how the Hawks had been on a slugging slump since district has started. There were 4 extra base hits in the game which helps when the bigger games come calling next Tuesday.

The Hawks would continue the onslaught with another 5 run 4th inning. The characters in this inning were the same as Dubois and Carrizales started this frame with singles and then Bailey Bryan would single those two speedsters home.

Bryan would score on a Mentzer double and then after another hit by Adriana Peaslee single had Kat Weber with her 2nd double of the game scoring the final runs in the game.

Peaslee is another one of those freshman that has made a good impression this season in the field and plate. Peaslee is presently batting at a .357 clip for the season and in district has upped her game with a .400 average.

Canyon Lake needed a win like this as they will play Fredericksburg this next Tuesday in Boerne for a seeding game.

The winner will be crowned the runner-up while that losing team would face the 2nd seed for their first opponent in the playoffs.

You Get’em this time. Go Hawks!!

The Hawks reached the playoffs after being absent for 5 years and now will try to keep this game fresh as the bats were humming and that pitching was a thing of beauty.

This victory also had Coach Gallagher reaching his 100 win milestone at Canyon Lake and now has 442 wins for his career.

Canyon Lake will be in action next Tuesday, April 25th at Boerne High School. The Hawks will be playing Fredericksburg and a win will have the Hawks seeded 2nd and a date with Navarro.

If CL loses, then thier next opponent is La Vernia later next week.
